randy2270 Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 Can anybody tell me when the Sweet 16 was first introduced, prototyped, and distributed. I got one from 1996 December and can assume it was sometime before that.

2bornot2bop Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 The Sweet 16 was introduced in 1987 according to Heritage. http://www.heritageg...delhistory.html I sure dig the one in ur collection brother! Those single set pups are rarely on the used market.
Gitfiddler Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 I sure dig the one in ur collection brother! Those single set pups are rarely on the used market. Thanks 2B. Sweet 16's are amazing instruments. They are built for sweet, compressed jazz tones.
Ned Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Somehow, this thread needs a photo. (note, completely unrelated to the OPs question, completely gratuitous, vintage 1990, sweet 16 and old enough to drink)
chico Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Sweet 16s... Ren's favorite. Love that one of Ned's wow. looks like it could be played without even being plugged in and sound good..
Ned Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 And she does have a nice acoustic voice. But per my avitar, the 575 gets most of the unamplified play. I have not strung the Sweet one with phosphor bronze, but I am very termpted sometimes to hear her at her acoustic best. Thanks everybody for the successful thread hijack.

Instead of Phosphor Bronze, try a set of LaBella 12 roundwounds or George Benson BeBops. They both ring acoustically on archtops and sound great amplified.
Ned Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Are these the Benson's of which you speak? I like TI strings, and I am a wound g kind of guy http://www.juststrings.com/toi-gr112.html

Ned Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Here is my former teacher with my sweetness, I hope you all enjoy this song.
randy2270 Posted October 29, 2012 Author Posted October 29, 2012 Also, this ax has the gold tuning pegs with the post modern design. You know the stacked rectangles look. I have a catalog from 1993 and it seems that those designs were used on the Eagles. Is this a replacement tuning peg, I thought it would be smooth and rounded off.
Ned Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 The pegs are the Grover Imperial. Heritage lists these as an option. You'll note this beauty also has the optional tone control. Also factory.
randy2270 Posted October 29, 2012 Author Posted October 29, 2012 i just put new strings on it, daddario EXL115W - so far I dont like it. i usually use GHS medium White bronze b.c they are like acoustic strings and make my epiphone sound like a super 400, but not so hot when playing melodies. so i opted for these guys. any recommendations. i also have the medium jazz d'addarios EJ 22 to try out.
Gitfiddler Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 here is a photo of my axe Randy2270~ You've got great taste! And again, welcome to the club... Here's an old shot of my Sweetie...
Ned Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 Pretty pretty pair. Not so common with the set pickup. Very sweet indeed. Thank you both for posting. Asb is in the house
randy2270 Posted November 3, 2012 Author Posted November 3, 2012 I normally don't go for the pickup in the top, I like the floating but I tend to get a wire buzz or some prob with the pickguard. The only guitar I never had this prob with was my eastman, the best part of that was the Pickup and ebony pickguard with the rolling volume know underneath. Recently, I have changed my approach. I no longer believe that a neck pickup challenges the integrity of the instrument. But don't let Marty Grosz hear me say that. I have decided to try the white bronze strings first , because I have like 3 sets hanging around, if that doesn't work I will go to the EJ22. I have a friend that is selling a 1992 Johnny Smith and a 2006 Kenny Burrell. 2500 and 1600 respectively. Let me know if anyone is interested and I will forward you to him. - randy d
randy2270 Posted November 3, 2012 Author Posted November 3, 2012 I really like that tailpiece, I mean I really like it. Not a fan of the wood or the individual string tailpieces. That one is stylish. For the record this axe used to have a floating pickup but had one installed in the top. It doesn't bother me as long as there is only one knob. I am thinking of replacing the Imperial pegs with the 3L3R grover ones. One of my pegs is a little bent and another is tarnished so bad it actually has texture to it. so, do I have to change the whole thing or can I just change heads. And if I replace them, which are the best.
randy2270 Posted November 13, 2012 Author Posted November 13, 2012 I put the white bronze on and it really speaks. I am used to playing acoustic but the pickup really makes a difference in this model. it is almost a necessity.
