schundog Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 My boss has a 55' Yacht he keeps in Belmont Harbor in Chicago, IL, named "What Was I Thinking?!" The irony is, he's had 5 or 6 boats with the same name, getting bigger every time. He knew EXACTLY what he was thinking! I've been down the amp road with this a few times, too, but I honestly came away each time wondering "What Was I Thinking?!" Today, I wandered into the Peoria GC and amongst the used junk I saw this Peavey ValveKing 212 100 Watt combo for $199. The big 6L6 bottles had been upgraded to Mesa Boogie tubes, about $50 a pair brand new, and there were 4 of them in this amp! Incredibly loud (way too loud for my needs), but I couldn't resist, paid them and lugged the thing to my car. All the way home, I'm kicking myself, as I don't even want to lug this damn thing down to the basement! I went by Monster Pawn on the way home, and the boss wasn't in, so the flunkies took it in, saying they would show it to him tomorrow. I trust the place, so at least I didn't have to carry it into the house, haha. If they try to rob me tomorrow (not likely, I got it at a good price) I'll keep it, maybe at church, so I don't have to carry an amp every time I am on the schedule there. Anyway, here's the Peavey that didn't quite make it home, at least not yet. I'll let you know how it pans out. http://i840.photobucket.com/albums/zz327/schundog/summer2012867.jpg[/img]"]https://
DetroitBlues Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 The Valveking was the best sounding amp I've owned. The 1x12 has an unrepairable flaw I discovered. Went through three before I sold it for a KBP build. $200 is cheap. The 100 waters are really good and there is a variable switch to cut the wattage on back.

PS-must be nice to work for the guy who owns the company!
brentrocks Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 i would bet that is a great amp...prob rocks your socks off
DetroitBlues Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 i would bet that is a great amp...prob rocks your socks off I know it will!
DetroitBlues Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Try this setting on your VK with a strat on clean channel.... Bass at 11, mid at 12:30, and treble at 1 o'clock. One the dirt channel, bass to 1, mid to 11, treble at 12 and gain to taste. With my 50 watt 1x12, I never had the volumes past level 4.
t0aj15 Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 The big 6L6 bottles had been upgraded to Mesa Boogie tubes, about $50 a pair brand new, and there were 4 of them in this amp!I have a Boogie Mark IV head, a Boogie Tri-Axis pre-amp, and a Boogie 50/50 power-amp and believe me when I say Boogies tubes are NOT an upgrade. When it's time to re-tube I use JJ's and will never pay for the overpriced junk Boogie sells. In fact the local 'authorized' Boogie repair shop owner told me he has an approx 50% return rate on Boogie tubes, and only carries them because he has to, to do 'authorized' Boogie repair.
schundog Posted October 25, 2012 Author Posted October 25, 2012 Wow! Good to know. I'll bet they are still better than the low end stuff a Chinese Peavey comes with, though. The only other experience I have with them was when I put a new pair of MB 6L6s in an old Peavey Classic. That rocked pretty hard. I usually buy JJs now, too.
schundog Posted October 26, 2012 Author Posted October 26, 2012 Well, the guy that owns all three stores was working the one I go to today, and he calls me, and says he can't give me what I want for the amp, but he wants to put it on the floor on consignment, and, if it sells, give me $50 MORE than I was asking. It obviously has to sell first. I knew I should have waited until my normal guy was in. This owner is cool, but he always busts my chops to try to get a better deal for himself, which, of course, is why he's in business. I remind him, every time, how much stuff I've brought to him over the years (and how much money he's made off of said stuff,) and we usually meet somewhere in the middle. My normal guy cuts me a little more slack, but still makes money. They piss and moan about how EBAY takes most of their profit, blah blah blah. Anyway, I went in this afternoon, and Ed smiled at me, asking if I got his message. "Yeah, I got it." "Well?" "I think I'm just going to take it back home." "Why?!" "Well, I came down a bit on my asking price already, and shot you a fair price. You didn't want to do it, so..." "C'mon, Brian, you aren't even playing the game with me!" We both laughed, and he cajoled me into letting him try to sell it for 2 or 3 weeks. If he sells it, I make $50 more than an instant sale. If it doesn't sell, I just go in and either pick it up, or make a deal with my normal guy. No biggie. I DID want to bring it home tonight to crank it up for a bit, though...

At the peril of your wife!
schundog Posted October 26, 2012 Author Posted October 26, 2012 At the peril of your wife! Yeah, it's a monster that wouldn't exactly "blend in" with the smaller amps sitting around. She'd notice it! Seriously, though, as long as she knows I paid cash that I had for it, she would just roll her eyes. I would like to bring it home and play with it for awhile, but it's totally impractical for what I need. If it doesn't sell, it may find a semi-permament home at church. 68.5 LBS! Here's the link. http://www.musicians...g-212-combo-amp

Here's the link. http://www.musicians...g-212-combo-amp I love it. Peavey makes good stuff and great value for the buck. I don't care what anybody says. Did I tell you about the Rage 158 that is on the way to me? Here is the link. http://www.ebay.com/...984.m1439.l2649
schundog Posted October 26, 2012 Author Posted October 26, 2012 The Rage 158 was my first amp. Indestructible, and does what it's meant to do! I plugged in my Mustang I tonight while watching the game. I didn't bother anyone. I don't think I'll be able to say that with the ValveKing! haha
AP515 Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Tonight I just happened to get out my peavey classic 30 out to run through. Loved it. Peavey does make good amps. I'd say you got a great deal. You should try it.
DetroitBlues Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Peavey has been a great value amp for me too. It's a shame you didn't bring it home first. But a shop owner told me once, a guitar can't play the blues unless it spent the night in the pawn shop. Wonder if the same goes for amps?
Millennium Maestro Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Thats exactly what I need for my new venture! Just picked up a Carvin V3 212 combo weighing in at a hefty 85 pounds and I dont feel like hauling it around on a daily basis.
212Mavguy Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Have a Peavey Rockmaster 3 channel rack preamp. Awesome. I love the adjustable bias knob on this amp! It's good for a leave at church amp because it's too heavy for a thief to easily run out of the building.with it. Bet it has headroom for days, would make a great gospel amp. Wouldn't have to worry about leaving something valuable there, and this amp should sound way more than decent.

t0aj15 Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Have a Peavey Rockmaster 3 channel rack preamp. Awesome. I've got one of those too, mated to a Classic 60 rack mount power-amp. Haven't played it in years, maybe I'll pull it out today and dust it off.
koula901 Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 I had a Peavey ValveKing 212 100 Watt combo in '76, and yeah, they're heavy! I can't believe I hauled that thing around, everywhere. Used to get great distortion, and there's nothing like the sound of two 12s in an amp - haven't been able to duplicate it since I got into smaller amps. But, now you know why I check out the weight of everything, first. Whatever I get, I have to haul up and down 3 flights of stairs. And I agree with the others who say Peavey's a great amp. Have since bought a Peavey Audition 110 (I suspect its a lot like Slammers). What a good tone for a solid state amp. I'd leave it at the church - like someone else said, some thief is not going to sprint up the street with it. ; )
schundog Posted October 26, 2012 Author Posted October 26, 2012 The ValveKing only came out about 5 years ago.
koula901 Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 The ValveKing only came out about 5 years ago. Not the one I had!! Granted it doesn't "look" the same - it has a whole different style to it, but it was definitely a Peavey Valveking 2-12 - I probably still have the receipt for it somewhere.
DetroitBlues Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 What would you expect from a shop owner. honesty? Maybe... Maybe not...
