dhiltong Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Can anybody give a little insight on the the black painted headstock stinger. I was told that the stinger indicated a hand built. I have a 575 with a custom shop label and no stinger and a 550 with a standard label and a stinger. My 86' 140 has one, but all of the Heritages from that era I've seen have one. I also have in my collection a mid sixties Gibson LG-1 with a stinger that is definitely factory origional, and it's exactly like the the ones on my heritages. I did a little research on that one and it is a mystery. Just curious, Don
SouthpawGuy Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 The stinger was a common feature on Heritage guitars until sometime in the '90s, my '86 170 and VIP2 both have one. It's still available as an option. Some don't like the stinger, I do, I think they're very cool.
kidsmoke Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 I'm with Southpaw on this one. Unless it's some dreamy flamed maple or multi piece neck, I'd spec a stinger. I think they're kewl. To my knowledge they have no meaning or designation....just a cosmetic design feature.
Gitfiddler Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Stingers were used by Gibson for cosmetic reasons on some of their high end archtops. They also used them on occasstion to cover flaws in the neck or heel area. I also think Heritage stingers are a nice addition to archtops.
SouthpawGuy Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 I seem to remember that at one point they may have been associated with a headstock repair, i.e. used to cover up the refin / repair. That may be true to some extent as I've seen photos of some oversized non factory stingers used for just that purpose. However, factory done on a five piece neck they are cooler than cool
DetroitBlues Posted October 29, 2012 Posted October 29, 2012 Originally it was meant to hide the wings on the headstock when the woods didn't match. It's become more of an added bonus now.

Kuz Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I don't know if I ordered the stinger on my Firebird but it's there and I like it. I can take or leave the whole stinger thing, but on that guitar, Ron, it was just MADE for a stinger!!!! Still and will be, one of my all time favorite Heritages!!!!!
pressure Posted October 30, 2012 Posted October 30, 2012 I love the look of stingers and have them on my Johnny Smith and Mille.

SouthpawGuy Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 agree, Bird's 357 is kickass!! southpawguy is that an eagle? looks kickass, as well!! That's not mine, worst luck, it belongs to skydog52.
pro-fusion Posted October 31, 2012 Posted October 31, 2012 I think they look great. Both my Heritages are black, so they wouldn't be candidates for stingers, but I'd totally order one on any other Heritage.
