MartyGrass Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 After several years trying to get happy with HRWs, it's finally happened. The secret in my case is to have other guitars with other pickups. I can lump pickups into one of three food groups. 1. Traditional humbuckers. Some are hot and some are not. 2. Single coils. I include Alumitones and P92s in this category even though they are not, but they sound somewhat similar. 3. Other. TV Jones, EMG actives and HRWs fit here. A complete meal requires some of each. I have my HRWs, which I got from Tallershadows (thanks), on a H157 and have D'Addario Half Round 10-52s on it. I keep the tone rolled off slightly on the bridge. It works fine. But it is distinctly different in sound compared to my H157 with Seth Lovers and the same strings.
bolero Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 have you ever tried Wolfetone Legends? they are some of my faves & fairly reasonably priced, compared to some
MartyGrass Posted November 8, 2012 Author Posted November 8, 2012 I don't doubt that Wolfetone Legends are great. It's just that I already have my kids on the street corner selling pencils to pay off the HRWs.
DetroitBlues Posted November 8, 2012 Posted November 8, 2012 Ha, thankfully I'm too broke to worry about it! I should start a franchise here for pencil sales!
Blunote Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Sounds like you had an epiphany. I agree. As much as I love HRWs in my Millie, I probably wouldn't be as happy with them if they were the only choice I had.
DC Ron Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 ++1 for D'Addario Half Round 10-52s, I use them on all of my semi's, which are all PAF humbuckers of one variety or another. These include a 535 and a Roy Clark. Doesn't matter whether I go up or down in gauge or if I go full flatwound or roundwound, I keep coming back to these. They are great strings and at $6 or so a set a real bargain. Sorry to hijack....

They ended my search for lighter gauge strings- at least for the last year.
Guest HRB853370 Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 Not sure what the issue is here. Pickups are pickups. Well sort of, as far as what they do mechanically. The HRW's have a sound of their own. But, IMO, any pickup can be made to sound good to the ear if you EQ it to your taste. End of story.

It cost me a little bit more than $6 to try them, as I hadn't ever tried them until I bought your VSB H-150 that you sent strung up with them. I DID like them, and would use them again, but maybe not on a solidbody. I'd like to try them on my 525 or 535. As far as HRWs, go, I have no experience, but I'm glad you've made your peace with them, Mark.
bolero Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 ouch..I sold an HRW to someone not too long ago for $60 oh well
High Flying Bird Posted November 9, 2012 Posted November 9, 2012 I don't like them. I sold mine to some sap in Vegas.
