I think I need to have the nut replaced on my 535. What material should I used for the replacement?

Bird, you have needed your nuts replaced for quite a while now!!

Oh, your guitar. OK, never mind bone, tusk will do just fine. And PETA will be happier.

Why do you think you need your nut replaced? Are the strings binding? Is your original cut improperly?

Basically, why do you need to have your dog fixed?

The g-string is slipping when I bend the B or E strings sometimes. I tried to sand the slot out and it didn't seem to help.

G string slippage while bending over can be completely normal :icon_jokercolor:

you might just need the slot widened a bit...is the string going flat, or sharp?

This time of the year I prefer chestnuts, lightly roasted over an open fire

That or bone, non-bleached.

Ehh... okay, I won't comment :)

unbleached bone is my nut of choice for nicer guitars, but tusq is pretty hard to beat from a price/performance/convenience perspective. Agree that the slot doctor should pay you a visit first though...

Sounds like it could be a tuner issue. Also you have a 'hillbillie crowbar' whammy on your 535, so it could be something in that contraption isn't happy.

Start with some 'hut sauce' or graphite in the slot.

Also, it could be a defective string. If I recall, you use light gauge strings. Try moving up to 10's or another brand.

So many possibilities. Keep us posted.

A lot of bone fans here, but it's Tusq for me every time.

I believe Tusq is more self-lubricating than bone. Bone is definitely the way to go on an acoustic, where there is less bending.

But WWTS?

Stew mac sells nice pre slotted unbleached bone that fit perfectly with very little final finishing needed . I did one on my 137

"Nut Law #1 states that the material of the nut will only affect the tone of the open strings. Fretted notes ignore the nut, tonally....the only exception being the rare instance in which a nut slot has been cut too low and allows the length of string behind the fret (ie, between the fret position and the nut) to vibrate sympathetically.

On the other hand, the bridge and tailpiece are always "in play" tonally."

Terry

Terry uses bone, fossil ivory (not modern ivory), wooly mammoth bone.

This guitar has always had this problem even when I had 10s on it. I put some locksmith's powdered graphite in the slots last night. It seemed to help but since I loosened the strings so much to get to the slots it had to settle. I will play it tonight and see how it behaves.

I'm certainly happy to see that we have covered your nuts Bird. :icon_pirat:
