Number8 Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 I know I've seen someone on here post pics of their Eagle Acoustic, but I can't find the person when I search. I've decided that this is going to be my next purchase* and I would like to ask this person some questions. If you are that person and you feel like helping me out, could you please reply to this and/or send a PM? Also, post pics? Thanks - #8 *If you've seen my V posts, the answer to your question is "Yes, I do suffer from schizophrenia".
yoslate Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 There was one floating around. Brent (Brentrocks) eventually wound up with it, and put it up for sale, maybe three or four months ago. It was a beauty! Might be able to track it down in the Heritage for sale section.
H Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 I think Martygrass had an all black one with no cutaways and I think big bob had a spruce top (?) one which I think he traded a while back. I'm doing a lot of thinking, as you can see :-/
Keith7940236 Posted December 1, 2012 Posted December 1, 2012 2bornot2bop had the Black one with no cutaway up for sale recently. I"m not sure if he sold it or not. Bretrocks was selling one for a friend of is. I'd be interested to know where that one went.
big bob Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 I sold my non cutaway to Ned, I wish I had not but I needed funds for the korina 357.. You can't have them all.
Number8 Posted December 2, 2012 Author Posted December 2, 2012 Thanks Bob. Were you the original owner? If not, do you know who was? I'd like to ask a couple questions about having one made. Thanks.
Number8 Posted December 2, 2012 Author Posted December 2, 2012 Ned - What are the woods? Is that an ebony bridge and are those ebony knobs on the tuners? How deep is the body? (I won't bother to ask if you'd sell it.) Thanks - Otto
Ned Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 I think an acoustic eagle is a great idea, this one is an employee build that really is a hybrid of a sweet 16 and a 575 (the sticker says custom shop 575, but I would quibble) Amazing one piece mahogany back, rims and neck. Spruce top, ebony fingerboard and bridge (basic brand x bridge, someday i'll have her fitted for something that makes better contact.) She is 3 3/8 deep at the rim and has a 25.5 scale. 16 inch bout I'd be interested in how she would sound as a 17 incher with maple sides and back (as i imagine an eagle would be). I say go for it. Her voice is big and seems to really project the fundamental tones. Overtones are present in the long sustain (much moreso than the sweet 16 which in contrast is somewhat percussive, still fine). The 575 compares to my old flat top mahogany guild, but louder, simpler tone - less muddiness to put it simply - and is happy getting a little dirty with blues. The few eagles i've heald are impressive for that expanse of spruce. Time is short for those planks. X braced with nothing mounted to the top would make for a fine instrument. I regret letting pass the one that brent sold roughly a year ago. And you are right, mine is not for sale, she still has much to teach me. You are in a great spot. I say jump
Ned Posted December 2, 2012 Posted December 2, 2012 I see you are in Chicago. The guitar on the left is a 1950's Kay from your fine city, and I have her identical twin in all mahogany (i think you can find a picture in the gallery). The Kays fall short of the Heritages, but make a respectful showing. This board, Keith, Marty, and Kuz principly, are about due for a tonewood thread.
Number8 Posted December 3, 2012 Author Posted December 3, 2012 Thanks Ned. It's like you're reading my mind. I also want a 17" bout, 3.5" depth, maple back and sides, with a spruce top and ebony for all the accoutrements. No binding, no bling, no inlays. Not sure about the finger-rest/pick guard, although I'm leaning towards no. Do you (or anyone else reading) have any opinion regarding the pros/cons of having no finger-rest or pick guard? Also do you (or anyone else reading) have a ballpark idea of what I described might cost? I have a 1957 Harmony that is similar in style to your Kay. It sounds like an old Robert Johnson when I play her (the old-timey sound that is, not the quality of my play). I'm actually considering selling her to finance this. Thanks for responding to my email. Your insights help a lot.
Ned Posted December 3, 2012 Posted December 3, 2012 One consideration on the finger rest is if you will ever want a pick up. Another is if your play style will marr the top. You can always add the rest later if you need it. Can't guess at the price, but I would be interested if you feel like sharing once you find out. It will be a bargain in terms of value.
Number8 Posted December 3, 2012 Author Posted December 3, 2012 Good point about putting the guard on later if necessary. That cinches it for me. I'll send you a PM once I have an idea about price. Anyone else have any thoughts on cost?
2bornot2bop Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 I'd be interested in how she would sound as a 17 incher with maple sides and back (as i imagine an eagle would be). A 17" Eagle would quite possibly be more of the same you're experiencing with the NC. This one, acoustically, was off the charts. Best GE I've owned yet. But in the end, I missed owning a big box...can't keep ev'thing! Gorgeous guitar...hard 4 me to see a 575 in that NC.
2bornot2bop Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 4got to add...Ms. Black Tie Affair found a new home with a recently enrolled college jazz student in Tennessee. That fact made her departure much easier.
Ned Posted December 4, 2012 Posted December 4, 2012 good placement on that. I bet it will take him or her far.
