The Memphis Project

Some of you have been thoughtful enough to inquire about my most recent project. I'd posted about playing a little guitar with some friends, and that we'd backed into "winning" the local IBC Blues Challenge. That got us an invite to The International Blues Challenge in Memphis, this coming February. Two other members of my old band, Lawyers Guns & Money, started side projects ahead of me. I pursued this, and exited LG&M. Toot and the Longshots, feels really good! I'm musically much, much happier here! But we struggle to get this act together. The big issue is time to rehearse, build a repertoire, and learn each other. The singer and harp player are recently married, and he brings two children into it. The bassist is the President and CEO of the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro, a busy guy! We've been working with LG&M's drummer -- Mike's a terrific player and good friend -- while Toot's drummer tours Turkey with Smokin' Joe Kubek and B'nois King. We've rustled up a couple of gigs. One bar gig with our friends, Blues World Order, and then the local blues society's annual Blue Christmas, with Bob Margolin. I'd posted video of the blues challenge, and then stumbled onto this, a video of the BWO gig. Didn't know anybody'd got it. We're a little rough...this is the drummer's first time playing with us. Some cues got lost, and we're not real sharp, but it was fun. And I play the super Super with this band, which delights me no end! For this gig, my good friend and BWO guitarist Brian Smith let me use his '57 Fender Vibrolux!

So I see retirement has been a real disappointment, huh Rob?!!!!!

And can we now put this whole "I can't use P-90s because they hum too much with bar lights" to bed!!! That's my boy Rob, a big old 18" archtop with P-90s and the man plays the blues without feedback or hum issues!!! I LOVE IT!!!!

I wish I could struggle like that! Nice playing Rob, you make that Super hum.

Oooh. Smooth. That's so nice. Love your comping in support of the vocalist. Warm warm warm guitar sound. 'Yeh Slater' - nice solo to close it out. That harp player has it, too. Does he use Super 20s?

Looks like a great project, Rob. Congrats. Looking forward to more vids!

Yeah man, very nice. Warm and smooth throughout the tune, and a finish with some tasty licks.

Definitely post any of these vids that you find... enjoyable stuff to watch and listen to.

Good luck from me as well, and nice playing! Have to admit that "LG&M" brings back many happy memories in a completely different context with Warren Zevon...

Great stuff Rob, It's hard to keep up with your musical travels. The steady rollin guy is one of my favorites and I'm envious that you get to play with him now and then. Your new group is very talented and you'll do well. Congrats!

Yo, Yo, Yoslate! SPANK that guitar! Real nice! : )

Whatever 'it' is, you've got it, Rob :) Keep making good use of your time!

Rob, very nice playing all around. You have a tasty, unselfish way of fitting into the overall band mix. And when its time to wake up that big bodied Super, you know just how to make her sing! Well done, professor. :icon_salut:

If you call that struggling, that nothing, we've done a lot worse! I rather enjoyed it the whol bit. The harp player is great, hard to find people who can play like that. Tones were even, everything cutting through just right! You have those P90's smokin the blues. Can't wait to hear more.

Just spent some time listening to the various videos from that night. GREAT playing! This group has a nice vibe to it... meaty with a laid back feel.

BTW, I'm really liking the singer. She sounds like she' really having a good time!
