bolero Posted December 16, 2012 Posted December 16, 2012 got a standalone reverb & delay unit, I think it sounded a bit weird with the reverb before the delay I have it running gtr-->delay-->reverb-->amp now but I was going back & forth....I'm not sure if I'm going crazy: my ears have totally lost their reference...heck maybe it doesn't even matter!! what is everyone else doing?

Ah, the age old "chicken/egg" question. I have tried both and settled on Reverb, then Delay. But after reading the above, perhaps I should switch them. But does it matter? Just because they are chained, does that mean one affects the other? I admit I am a stompbox moron....
bolero Posted December 16, 2012 Author Posted December 16, 2012 ok I had my R05 recorder setup while I was messing around...switching pickups, reverb & delay off & on etc reverb before delay: http://bolero.comyr.com/misc/jam/exp01.mp3 delay before reverb: http://bolero.comyr.com/misc/jam/exp02.mp3
Guest HRB853370 Posted December 16, 2012 Posted December 16, 2012 Chris, on "delay before reverb" I honestly cannot hear the delay, but just the reverb. On the reverb before delay, I can hear both. That is the way I have my chain and I think I will leave it that way.
bolero Posted December 16, 2012 Author Posted December 16, 2012 hmm i think you're right..i must have cut the wrong chunk out!!
Kuz Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I am definitely in the delay then reverb came. Otherwise you are oscillating the reverb and developing a muddy signal. And even with the delay before the reverb, I would suggest greatly turning down the amount of reverb you use with delay vs the amount of reverb with no delay used. I have found that live, I use quite a bit of delay and have very little to no need for reverb at all.
JeffB Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 delay then reverb for me. the reverb softens and blends the tail end of the delays repeats. I only use reverb barely on and my delay is set to 1-2 repeats and at 250-300ms and low in the mix , but if I had reverb then delay it could get a little messy as the reverb was bounced through the repeats of the delay. Might be all right in a more ambient sort of music. edit: what Kuz said
bolero Posted December 17, 2012 Author Posted December 17, 2012 thx guys yeah I found reverb + delay was kind of pointless, it made the delay sound muddy & you couldn't really hear the reverb much anyway, with the delay going on
koula901 Posted December 19, 2012 Posted December 19, 2012 : ( not able to hear the clips - I take it everyone else could. for the record, I put my reverb after the delay.

smurph1 Posted December 28, 2012 Posted December 28, 2012 Call me crazy..I hate delay..But LOVES me some nice tube reverb!!

DetroitBlues Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 Call me crazy..I hate delay..But LOVES me some nice tube reverb!! I prefer one or the other, not both. But my delay is nearly set up like reverb...
Kuz Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 I prefer one or the other, not both. But my delay is nearly set up like reverb... They can coexists together nicely but lower levels of reverb are needed. Almost an unadiable amount of verb. It helps to fatten up the tone if not overdone, especially if you play a clean song. My El Capsian delay even has a feature where you can add reverb to the delay, but it doesn't offer the reverb by itself, some delay needs to be on.
t0aj15 Posted December 29, 2012 Posted December 29, 2012 yeah I found reverb + delay was kind of pointless, it made the delay sound muddy & you couldn't really hear the reverb much anyway, with the delay going on Ditto, for myself it's one OR the other, not both at the same time.
VigilAndy Posted January 7, 2013 Posted January 7, 2013 Reverb after delay for me (both in the effects loop of my amp). I use a El Cap for slapback and that is usually without verb. If I want to get a spacey, I also have another delay on my board for longer repeats and that works OK with verb.
