535 advice

Hey all,

I fell in love with a 2004 535 in ASB this month, sold some gear and now I'm nervous. Granted, I love a good deal, so I always do my research. It has the Schaller pups, which sounded fairly good to me. I have some crappy iPhone pics I could post.

My question-they have it at $1400. I've been watching the bay and the forums here. That seems a bit on the high side to me, but I thought I'd ask you all first. My gut tell me to offer them $1200 out the door and see if they will deal. (apologies to the mods if price discussion is frowned upon.). What say you?

No, dont apologize, try to nail it for $1200. I bought my 2005 Trans Cherry 535 with upgraded pups for $1200. That is defintely in the ball park! Good LUck! My other 535 is a 25th anniversary and I paid $1400.

I wouldn't say $1400 is abnormally high. Maybe the high end of normal. What kind of shape is it in?

I'd say $1100-$1200 is the nice median price range for the model. BUT... you do have to ask yourself, "If they don't bite... am I going to let a guitar I absolutely love walk away to the tune of $200?"

I'd bet they go down a little. :)

...or what Slammer posted while I was trying to post.

I paid $1350 for mine, Seth Lover p'ups and Schaller hardware. Went TonePros, to replace the Schaller. It's your money, and you know what you can afford. For $1350, plus the hardware, I bought the best guitar I've ever owned, and I've owned a bunch.

What those two guys said.. That said, negotiate hard for $1200, as that's a fair price for a 535 with Schallers that you WILL probably want to upgrade at some point down the road. Just my 2 cents; I kept my Schaller equipped 535 stock for 1.5 years, changed to SD Antiquities, and then wondered why I had waited so long.

I'd agree with barrymclark, it is within the normal range. I just keep seeing ones with Seth Lovers go for $1400-1500, so I'd love to come down from that number a bit. It plays beautifully, but-I think I'm in love with the finish the most!

My $1200 535 came wiith upgraded TonePros hardware and the Gibson 57 classic pickups. He also included the original Schaller hardware and Schaller pickups. I sold the pickups for $100 and the hardware for $75 on Ebay. So now I only have $1025 in the guitar!

$1400 isn't bad if you like the guitar.

If it is very good condition $1400 is a good price.

Go for it! I paid £1100 for my ASB 535 (that's currently about $1750) so US prices always look appealing to this Englishman.

Condition is everything when determining the price. However, if you are okay with minor cosmetic flaws such as polishing swirls or dings in the headstock finish, you should have no trouble finding something in the $1100 - $1200 range. For those deals, you might also have to pay for shipping or Paypal fees, which add another $100 or so. If you can get it locally from a guitar store, and they will also set it up for you or swap the pickups with no labor charge, maybe give you a break on buying other accessories ....... $1400 may not be unreasonable for something in excellent condition and that you love.

Assuming it's in excellent shape, and is set up right, $1400 is about right. Any need for work or any dings etc would probably kick it down to the $1200 to $1250 range. I paid $1250 for mine plus about $30 for shipping.

That one looks like it came from Jay Wolfe's based on the pick guard. I think he usually speced the Tone Pros hardware on most of his guitars. 535s are great guitars.

Paid $1100.00 for mine, in a shop, so they had to make a couple dollars. I chose to swap out a bunch of items on it, but it didn't NEED to be done.

Try and get them down, but as said above...if you LOVE the guitar....that's worth a lot.

I guess you can look at it this way. You won't find a new one at that price.... You can lurk around for awhile before finding another one, might take some time. Or end your gas pains and buy it now.

I got mine for $1200 off ebay. it was listed at 1300. If you play it and it's set up nice and in good shape, I'd say 1400 is a good price. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.

It depends on how much you want that particular guitar. I think the Schaller pups are awful, (personal opinion) but I bet you will change them if you buy. I would always try and get a deal regardless, but if you think the guitar is a keeper and a must have, then the extra $200 over the next ten year is nothing, is it?

By the way, 535's are superb, I have a 555 but a few of the european and UK members have them and they are special guitars.

I did call Wolfe Guitars (they are local) and spoke to them about it. What a great store! I call them, ask them a question about a used guitar at another store, and they are happy to give advice and insight. I went today to make an offer on it and they wouldn't budge. Although I would eventually want to update the pups, the guitar plays so smooth-It makes me want to just sit and play for hours!

What's killing me is that lately on ebay I've seen 535's with Seth Lovers go for what they are asking for this guitar.

I'll paraphrase you from further back in the thread: plays beautifully and you love the ASB finish.

What's stopping you? Seth Lovers and the rest can come later: buy it and enjoy it now :)

Awful??? Compared to?

I respectfully and meaningfully disagree with that statement.

Schaller pickups are not BAD, and Golden 50's are not much less expensive than Seth Lovers. If you like it, I say go for it. These are hand made, which means if you get another, you might not like the neck as much, or the feel.

Drew, if you went to the shop and played the guitar, then what did you think of the pickups? I'm assuming you plugged it in to check it out. Maybe take your main amp and try it out.

They weren't bad. The clean tone was sweet and smooth, especially the neck and in-between. I tried some amp OD on an AC30 and a Mesa 5:50. Not terrible, but not great.

I'm used to single coils, and a solid body electric, so this is completely new ground for me. It makes me want to play blues and jazz for hours. I'm hoping the rock n roll inspiration will come too!
