Otis Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 I have been looking around for a nice Heritage guitar -- my first foray into the brand -- and was watching this beautiful H-555 on ebay -- was SO READY to post my first NGD thread here! I fell in love with it. Made the minimum bid at $1599, and was the lead and only bidder through the entire auction. I was out today as it was ending and someone snuck in and got it for 25 bucks more! Ugh! These H-555s are so stunning -- I don't see why anyone would be an ES-335 when they could get something more "original" and with tons more bang for the buck. People are such slaves to brands... Anyway, total bummer. I think this would have been a great deal for this guitar. I'm hoping at least someone here was the villain! In the meantime, my hunt continues on, and one day I'll come across that perfect Heritage and it shall be mine... -Oats
Steiner Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 Sometimes the hunt is the best part. It t'warn't me what took your NGD away. Whomever it was will be having a real fun day soon. Your day will come too. Happy hunting.
2bornot2bop Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 So you don't fall victim to snipers in the future - If you're serious about an auction, always make 2 bids. Feebay allows one the option to enter a bid amount, and then go back and reenter a higher amount to guard against being sniped at the auction end. Well, at least not before bidding your highest bid amount you'd like to bid on that item. So for instance, had you bid the minimum opening bid, and then placed a second bid at $1800 that sniper would have been forced to bid greater than $1825 on that 555 auction. Did U see this 2004 model 555? Probably even nicer in some respects...okay, that's a matter of personal preference. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2004-Heritage-555-w-OHSC-/261153341269?pt=Guitar&hash=item3ccdf3bf55 Good luck!

"" This 2004 Heritage 555, which is their version of the Gibson 355, has 2 small nicks on the top of the guitar, near the pick ups, which can’t even be seen in the larger pictures, but I’ve included a close up. Also, is the headstock repair a huge red flag? Let's assume I'm not buying it as a collector, but as a guy who plans to keep the guitar forever. Will this kind of thing affect playability etc.? Thanks.

But what is the difference between just entering the highest amount you want to bid in the first place? A proxy bid on ebay does not show the amount you bid, it only shows what the bidding is at that moment. When I see people entering multiple bids on my auctions, it tells me that are worried that their first bid was not high enough so they upped it with a second or even third bid. I have found the best way to nail something you want on Ebay (not Freebay, there is NOTHING free about Ebay) is to sign up with Esnipe. You purchase points which are very inexpensive. Then, you just copy the URL of the auction you are wanting to bid on. You tell them what price you want to have the Esnipe bid on, and it will bid at the very last second (you get to determine when you want to bid to execute, down to 1 second if you want). Most of the time you will beat out another bidder that tries to bid using Ebay in the final few seconds. If two or more bidders are using Esnipe the one with the higher amount and the shortest time between the bid and auction end will win. Check it out: www.esnipe.com
SouthpawGuy Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 What would be fair value for it? $1300? Less? Personally I wouldn't buy a headstock repaired guitar unless it was really cheap. Always a gamble the headstock might fail again during shipping. Might be worth the risk at $800, even then personally I probably wouldn't bid on it at all.
DC Ron Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 If I had every guitar I lost out on by one bid I'd be broke and divorced. Sent from my HTCEVODesign4G using Tapatalk 2

Agreed, nuthing moves there without ebay and paypal with their hand out. Which is why I refer to it as feebay. to the OP I was not aware that 555 had a neck repair. That's 2 of the same model with neck repairs in the same week....that's a bad trend.

Are you saying all 555's and 535's have bum necks?????
Telenic Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Seems like way too much for a bad headstock. And, I didn't like the way the seller buried the comment after three long paragraphs of copy.
Telenic Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Are you saying all 555's and 535's have bum necks????? I think it seems like this comes up a lot because guitars with neck repairs stay on the market for so long. They are tough to sell.
houndhome Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 I haveacouple of 60's Gibsons and a Hofner Committee bass which have suffered headstock breaks (before my time) and they have remained perfectly stable but I bought them all at prices which were way below (maybe half) market price for one wthout this kind of damage.

I've read a lot of this. It sounds like a great way to get a killer discount on a guitar with a problem that is much less serious than typically perceived. In fact, I read on a Les Paul board that the broken necks actually ENHANCE the tone if they are repaired well. I agree the one linked above is priced too high.
mark555 Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 I own a beautiful 555, there's nothing wrong with the necks. If a neck breaks on any guitar is usually down to mishandling somewhere. Here's hoping that you find yourself a nice 555, keep your eye on the for sale section here, people who don't want to join the HOC will sell their guitars here.
yoslate Posted January 14, 2013 Posted January 14, 2013 In fact, I read on a Les Paul board that the broken necks actually ENHANCE the tone if they are repaired well. Couldn't vouch for this, but I've repaired badly broken (clean off) headstocks on vintage instruments that have, post repair, been perfectly stable.
Steiner Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 If you line up the two pieces and glue with sufficient clamp force, It's as good as new.
Eyegore Posted January 15, 2013 Posted January 15, 2013 Here's a pretty one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Electric-Semi-hollow-Body-Heritage-Sunburst-Almond-Model-H-555-Guitar-with-Case-/321055776116?pt=Guitar&hash=item4ac06a5d74

Otis Posted January 31, 2013 Author Posted January 31, 2013 Wow, ANOTHER one with a neck/headstock issue on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1989-HERITAGE-GIBSON-SEMI-HALLOW-H555-ALMOND-SUNBURST-/261163132232 This must seriously have been a problem with these?

I doubt it. Probably the only reason they're on Ebay in the first place is because they got broken.
