gpuma Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I am ignorant. I am starting this thread to get an idea on what, how and how much should be done on my 575 to give her a fresh new look. Basically after seeing Slammer's 550 I decided that I want to change the hardware on my 575 and put gold. These are my (first) questions: Is it possible to replace just the pu covers or do I need to swap the entire pu? Is there any market for used tailpieces? How much should that cost?
Number8 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 You only need to replace the covers; they are sold separately. You will find that there are tailpieces on Ebay and other places but new ones aren't terribly expensive.
skydog52 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I am going to change some covers soon and found this helpful video.

gpuma Posted January 16, 2013 Author Posted January 16, 2013 How much would a golden "H" tailpiece be?

PunkKitty Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 How much would a golden "H" tailpiece be? You would probably need to contact Heritage for that.
MartyGrass Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I don't think you can get one of those bail tailpieces anymore. How about a nice gold Bigsby?! Seriously, there are a lot of nice tailpieces out there.

gpuma Posted January 16, 2013 Author Posted January 16, 2013 well, i might say something completely idiotic here... but I think I remember that the tailpiece on my 575 functions also as an input for the jack as well a pin for the strap. I looked a little on the internet and I don't see any like that. Am I missing something?
MartyGrass Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Oh. While I haven't seen anyone do this, I'll bet you can guild the TP for not too much money. Anyone here know what's involved in gold plating?
kidsmoke Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Gio, Chicago is quite literally the trophy manufacturing capital of the world. there are dozens upon dozens of platers around. Problem is the cost for a single piece. I'd find a trophy shop that does production, ask them to recommend a plater, or see if they'll throw the TP in a pan going to the plater already, and you can pay them some min charge. Problem then is will it match the other gold hardware. Personally, I feel this is heresy. Just sell me your guitar and order another one with the gold hardware. Problem solved.
H Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 If I'm right (and I think I am) the chrome plating on the tailpiece will have to be stripped first. Then it will have to be nickel plated to provide a smooth 'key' stage for the gold plating. Gold plating wears very easily, get as many microns thickness on the tailpiece as you can afford!

I'm not sure if that's true or not, but if it's not you could try something like this: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,_tailpieces/Archtop_guitar_tailpieces/Kluson_Archtop_Guitar_Tailpiece.html
gpuma Posted January 16, 2013 Author Posted January 16, 2013 Yeah I have seen those... Not exactly good looking, though

You can have a luthier move the output to the lower bout, plug the hole in the end with mahogany dowel and go on with the transformation.
skydog52 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 How much would a golden "H" tailpiece be? They are hard to find. I purchased one on the Bay awhile back. Got lucky I even e-mailed Schaller a few times but never got a response.

You should pop in there and take a look.

Seriously... thanks a lot, maybe I can get something from Godin Well, I was thinking that maybe seeing it installed on a guitar would change your perception of it. I was the stewmac link as was unimpressed, but seeing it on the guitar, it was a clean piece, not bad at all. Makes me realize, you still want to see the beautiful wooden instrument, and not be too blinded by the bling. See what you think.
gpuma Posted January 17, 2013 Author Posted January 17, 2013 you have a point. And I must confess, I am surprised by myself wanting to switch to gold, as I never was a fan of it. On the other hand you know that guitar, the walnut finish is really deep and it really needs a certain light to shine. I believe that some bling will have a refreshing effect on her.
