yoslate Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Had a semi (576 all maple body, mahogany neck) with them. GASguy (Ron) has it, now. Everything I could want at each position: slightly woody twang, at the bridge; Lester-ish honk at the middle; warm and round, with just a touch of snap, at the neck. Just a terrific set of tones and a very versatile guitar! So, why'd I get rid of it? Lucked into a 535 that is even better....
schundog Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I haven't had Phat Cats; I would like to try them, probably in a solidbody to see how they compare to my 137 with Lollars. Back to your question, all I know is my 525 (laminate body on these) with Lollars is fantastic. Very different than the 137 with the same Lollars, obviously, but a great rhythm guitar that is everything Yoslate said about the 576 he owned, probably just not as big and hollow sounding as the larger 576.
High Flying Bird Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 My 535 has Phat Cats in it. It's the best sounding out of all my guitars. I changed HRWs out for them. I would definitely do it again. The tone is much like a humbucker but more creamy. They sound differently than the Lollars in my 137 too. I prefer the Phat Cats.
big bob Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I have a 575 with prails in it. Sounds sweet, feedback is only an issue with a lot of volume+gain and then it's manageable.
High Flying Bird Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I got Phat Cats in my 357/Firebird so I could easily change out the pups if I wanted. When I got my daughter an old used 137 from GC it had Schallers in it. I ordered a set of Cats for it and I was surprised that one on the pups was only $39.00. When I ordered the PCs for my 535 the one pup was still $39.00. Check it out. Tomorrow night I will be letting the 535 howl through the Ac-15. It will only get good feedback.... according to me. Can you dig it!
H Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I second Ron's love for a Phat Cat-loaded 535. Tones from creamy to snarly - a good halfway house between narrow single coils and humbuckers. What sort of tones are you looking for?
SofaPlayer Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I've been drooling over the tone in this video for years: (H555 with Phat Cats)
H Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I recognise a lot of those tones from my 535 into a 5E3 or Vox Night Train. Go for it.
