Amp partner for a H535

Recommended Posts

I've only been on the forum for a week so I'm sure this has been discussed before. I've just received my H535 today, and would appreciate some thoughts on amps that work well with it.

I know everyone has different views on tone, but are there any particular amps that really suit the 535? I have a Cornell Romany Plus and Yamaha THR-10C already, so maybe I'm in the right ballpark with those two.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Thanks,

Michael

Blues and classic rock-ish type stuff. I'm planning to have a go at some jazz if I can persuade my fingers to bend in unnatural directions.

In another life, I'd like to be Aynsley Lister, Matt Schofield and Joe Satriani rolled into one.

My first suggestion then is a Blackstar Artisan 15. Good cleans and easy to get a nice Voxy crunch out of it. Handwired and quite lovely :)

Second suggestion: Fender Deluxe Reverb reissue.

If you're interested, I know where there's a 1983 (Rivera era) handwired Fender Concert for sale in pretty decent nick. Around £500 gets you lots of amp with this one.

I would have thought that the Cornell would be just fine, unless you intend to gig with it, in which case it might be a bit under powered. For home use 10W would be more than enough, and if you've been happy with the Cornell with your other guitars it should be fine with the 535. I've gigged my 535 with a Mesa Maverick and a Fender Blues Junior and it sounds fine to me. I suspect that a 535 will sound great with pretty much any decent amp.

Thanks all.

I don't have any plans to gig at the moment so it would be for home use. I was originally planning to buy a Blues Jr but went for the Cornell several years ago, partly because I wanted to support the little guy (Dennis Cornell in this case). Mind you, I picked up the Yamaha THR-10C at the end of last year and tend to use that more at the moment. It does a reasonable impression of a Blues Jr or Deluxe at low volumes without taking up much space.

It sounds like I'm in the right ballpark already so I ought to spend the next few months getting to know the guitar, rather than adding yet more gear I don't need.

Of course you don't NEED it! We're trying to *enable* here ;)

Oh yes, good point. What was I thinking when I wrote that?

Thanks for the suggestion about the '83 Concert, Howard. My knowledge of early '80s amps is pretty limited. Well, almost non-existent at this point, so I need to do some digging.

Did someone ask about Fender Rivera-era Concert amps??

They are clean amps, but sound great with pedals, loud, toneful, point to point and best of all, very reasonably priced at this time. Be aware, they are also pretty heavy. I love mine!

As a starter home amp, I might suggest the Bugera V5 5W 1X8 Combo- All-tube Class A amp w/ excellent cleans and digi reverb - http://www.bugera-amps.com/EN/products/V5.aspx ...

< $150 USD, this hand-wired 'boutique' style amp features 1 x 12AX7 tube (rectifier), 1 x EL84 tube (power), a 3-way power attenuator allowing a .1, 1.0 and 5.0 W output, plus a headphone jack (unusual in an all-tube amp). It can also power an external cab up to 12". It is MUCH louder than the 1X8" and 5W sounds... louder than many 15W units.

It's an amazing pkg. really, esp. for the price. In the UK - http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B002GHBZ4U/?smid=A27AGRTS8YDVO7&tag=idealocouk-mp-21&linkCode=asn&creative=6742&camp=1638&creativeASIN=B002GHBZ4U , http://www.thomann.de/gb/bugera_v5.htm .

Alternately, the Epiphone Valve Junior is similar and also excellent (minus the Reverb).

Cheers!

Ha, thats like asking what kind of cheese you should put on a hamburger!

Whatever sounds good to your ears JAM! I have played my 535 through both solid state and tube amps. Of course, if you really want to bring out that humbucker tone with a semi, you probably want an amp that will saturate at around 5 or 6.

Thanks. I spent some time trying out the H535 and several others through my Cornell over the weekend. I have to say it seemed to work very nicely so I'll probably just stick with that for the moment. The sustain from the H535 is incredible. I thought the notes were never going to decay completely.

I too will endorse the Bugera 5W!

It's a great little amp for practice, small scale jams. At the $150 price point it has virtually no downside, I've had min for about 3 years with no problems.

Thanks, Thundersteel, the Swart amps looks lovely. I see what you mean about "you'll thank me later"; it's £1,199 new for the standard STR and £1,299 for the STR Trem in the UK. They're almost £-$ like-for-like, which seems pretty much the norm :(

I shall add them to the long shortlist!
