Second Heritage?

Folks,

As my H535 only arrived last Friday, it feels a little premature to consider adding further to the Heritage collection. However, I'd be interested in views about the second Heritage. I am stunned by the H535, it's a truly lovely thing and sounds great so it feels rude not to consider it having a little brother or sister at some point!

I'm thinking about either a H155 or possibly H150. I already have a Japanese Tokai Love Rock, so I thought the H155 would add more variety than a H150, but I'm open to comments.

Any views on the characteristics of both the H150 and H155? Differences in terms of playability (if any), tone, versatility, e.t.c?

As ever, I look forward to your views.

Thanks,

Michael

Michael,

Congrats on the H 535. What a great guitar!

Those H-155's look really interesting. A H-155 would most likely split the difference between the Tokia and the H-535.

Either way,I wish all decisions in life were so safe.

Well, "safe" only if my wife fails to notice :)

Her: "What's that?"

Me: "Oh, this old thing? I've had it for years, it was under the bed."

Her: "Hmmmm......"

au contraire! makes you normal! :-)

Normal??? Thanks, eljay, but I'm not sure I feel normal :)

Anyway, back to my original question - I'd be interested in views on the H155 and H150.

the 150 is a great guitar, but as a fellow Tokai owner, you will have to get an exceptional one to make the difference between the Tokai and the 150, but i'd have a 150 tomorrow if the top was right and I could afford it!

By the way, I am hosting another UK get together at my home later this year when the better weather comes, it's a bit of a trek from London, but you would be welcome, as would any UK Heritage owner.

I don't understand why anyone would want two Heritage guitars?

8 or 10 or 12 Heritages maybe, but only 2 Heritages seems odd.......

Yep, perfectly normal for this crowd. I bought my first in October, my second in November, my third in December, my fourth in January and my fifth last week. Can't wait for March!

Is this a slippery slope I see before me....???

I might struggle to justify more than half a dozen though.

Mark, thanks. I am going to head to the guitar show in Birmingham (UK, not Alabama) on Sunday so will have a peruse and a ponder. The Tokai was the first guitar I bought so I'm reluctant to part with it. I just wish I'd started playing 25 years ago, although I'd have at least half a dozen Heritages by now if that were the case.

I've long since stopped trying to justify things.Just one Heritage (an H575) for twenty years, although about sixty others,

but since the start of December I've added an H150Ultra,H555,Golden Eagle and Super Eagle. To be fair I've sold three

other makes with some others on the pending list but logically I have too many guitars,so the hell with logic.

It is possible that I may be at the Birmingham show on Sunday.

I agree you need at least three or more!

sell the Tokai & buy an H150 :D

Very very funny :) The thought has actually crossed my mind but I take Mark555's point that there may not be a lot of difference. I shall now go and wash my mouth out for saying that!

As I only have six guitars in total, I'm sure I'll find space / reason to justify (if justification is required) a couple more. Or so. The current brood is a bit of a curious mix:

I'd probably swap one of the others before the Tokai, to be honest.

:) It sounds like I'm not the only one that goes through phases of not buying anything for a while, then catching the GAS bug again. I've had a very quiet 18 months, haven't really bought anything other than the Yamaha THR-10C amp since mid-2011 so it only seems fair to add to the family.

I'm really impressed with the H535; it's far better than I expected. Speaking of which, time for a bit of guitar practice...

The 150 will be very close to the sound of your Love Rock. From what I've been told, the 155 will be a bit more like 535 or another semi hollowbody with no F-holes. From a looks perspective, it's a totally unique instrument....

But as other suggested, the 137 is a great rock and roll machine if you can get ahold of one. P-90 growl, all mohagany slab body, might be close to the tone of an old Gibson SG Special....

ha!!

I actually have an '81 Tokai LS60 love rock, while it's a very good guitar I'd take an H150 over it any day

but they are very similar designs

The 155 is a Millie with no f holes. My f holed Millie Std Ultra sounds a lot closer to the solid body 150 and 157 than it does to a 535.

My guess is that a 155 will also sound closer to the Tokai than expected, probably with less bite than a 150 / Love Rock / Les Paul but a lot closer to a solid body. Hence my suggestion for something with P90s.

Second.........Third............Fourth.......Fifth.......etc...............................................................................I give up!

Something with P90s .. a 137 or a 150.

YES! after 8+ years I finally picked up a guitar with P90 (a H137dc)...amazingly good pickups that everyone seems love once they play them.

I had a Hamer Korina Special Jr for a while, double cut, single P90, volume, tone. That's it. I bought it pre-owned and sold it back to the same chap from whom I bought the guitar a couple of years later. It was beautifully-made but for some reason I just didn't get on with it. The guy who bought it back again was delighted as he loved it. The H137 looks to be in a similar ball-park so I would have to try one before making any sort of commitment (unlike the H535 :) ).

I already have a mahogany body / twin P90 guitar in my Melancon P90 Artist, which is about as far removed from a nice straightforward H137 as you can get. I admit it's a bit OTT really (koa top, multi-way switching on the pick-ups e.t.c), but it does sound great. It's probably closer to a really grunty T-type than a H137 though.

I bought my first Heritage (a 575) last year after having mainly Gibson guitars for some 45 odd years. I am fortunate enough to also have an ES-175 to compare it to and the 575 is the 175's equal in every respect.

So... after owning several 335's in the 60's and 70's I wanted another one (a 335) but instead looked to Heritage for something to fit the bill and I stumbled on a Prospect custom and I bought it. The Prospect is an overlooked jewel and passed over by those who favor the 335 style body.
