Gillnetter Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 I'm getting ready to put a new Phat cat P90 in my H150 neck position. do I need to change the tone cap as well, or do I go with what is in there now.
H Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 For once I'm going to disagree with the Bird on Phat Cats. I'd say at least *try* an .033 cap with it.
High Flying Bird Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 What does the .033 give you that you like better than the .022?
H Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 I suppose the easiest way to explain it is that it gives me that slight difference in sound I get by rolling off the volume to 8, Ron. I tried .022, .033 and .047 caps and liked the 33s most. If the OP is wiring up a new pickup, it's only a few minutes more work to try out some different value caps.
hinesarchtop Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 The value changes how much of the highs roll of. I like 033's im humbucker guitars too. For me the value is only a guideline. Experiment and let your ears tell you what sounds better.
High Flying Bird Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 I suppose the easiest way to explain it is that it gives me that slight difference in sound I get by rolling off the volume to 8, Ron. I tried .022, .033 and .047 caps and liked the 33s most. I might try that on my Firebird just to see how it sounds. I was thinking the question was do you wire them like single coils. I usually roll down my volume when I play chords. Does the .033 give you more or less treble, bass or more or less volume? Your making my soldering iron hard thinking about this.
H Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 It's a slight treble roll-off, Ron. The effect feels more like the slight loss of treble when you roll off the volume when using modern wiring. Take that big, smouldering soldering iron in your hand and make love to your pots.
