flattop Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Would a golden eagle or sweet 16 with a floating pickup be considered an acoustic archtop ?
Ned Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 Yes, but...there is a difference between the 16 and the Eagle. Based upon limited experience, the shallower body of the Sweet 16 seems to reduce sustain and add percussiveness. Of the two guitars in my avatar, the deeper bodied 575 has a softer attack, longer sustain, and more mids and bass. (tapped tuned spruce over mahogany back and sides must have some effect too). The Sweet 16 sounds great acoustic, just not like an Eagle (limited experience) which has a bigger and richer sound. The 16 loves light amplification and a touch of reverb.
Gitfiddler Posted February 27, 2013 Posted February 27, 2013 I play my 16 and GE mostly acoustically these days. If amplified, it's VERY soft so that I can still hear the natural acoustic sweetness. Even though my Sweetie has a set-in pickup, it still sings with the angels.
hinesarchtop Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 I agree with gitfiddler that some with a set in neck pickup sound great acoustically too.
Genericmusic Posted February 28, 2013 Posted February 28, 2013 It is by me...and most others I believe.
sonar Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 I agree with gitfiddler that some with a set in neck pickup sound great acoustically too. My eagle Classic with X-bracing certainly sounds VERY nice, acoustically:
