New H-170 Day

I picked this one up from The Gear Page last week. It arrived today. It's a 1997. This one is very different from my 1985 H-170. It feels and plays differently. The previous owner installed a set of older PRS pickups in it that sound great. I've noticed that this one is 1.5" thick. My 1985 is 2" thick. When did Heritage change the 170?

How is the weight between the two? Is the thinner one any lighter? Different thickness and pickups, it will be interesting to hear a tone report from you. These are two different animals.

Very cool guitars,

Both guitars weigh 7.4 pounds. But the weight is balanced differently on the thinner one so it seems a bit heavier.

That's a good looking gee-tar, Monica. Like the finish and grain a lot. 7.4 lbs! Much lighter than I would have guessed. Congrats.

Does it sound much different than the 2" one??? I saw that guitar on The Gear Page, and thought it would be great

set up for slide guitar with that upper fret access! Glad you like it:)

It sounds different. But I attribute that to the pickups. The PRS pickups are very warm sounding. The Gibson Burstbuckers I have in my other one are a bit brighter.

That has been my experience with Burstbuckers too. I really like the ones in my 60 reissue, but I've had two other sets I hated, for being TOO brittle! I'm glad you like the PRS pickups, which I'vew had good luck with too. I especially like the SC245 pickups!

I haven't decided if I'm keeping the PRS pickups or not. I prefer the Burstbuckers. But I'm also toying with the idea of installing a set of P-Rails in one of the 170's.

Congratulations on that H-170! Can't beat a double-cutaway.

I haven't tried those Prails out but they look interesting. Like I said Burstbuckers are hit and miss with me. The ones in my reissue sound great, but others have sounded like a freakin kazoo!

PK,

If you get the chance could you post a picture of the two guitars backs. I would like to see how the heel/neck joint differ.

This snow is awesome,

You are on a 170 TEAR PK! How does one buy stuff on the GP? Is it like Fleabay?

Congrats on the NGD miss Kitty. Nice upper fret access on those. TGP guitar emporium is GAS inducing for sure.

Finally we have someone to rival Brent! :) Nice 170, I often think back fondly to the one I had.
