Glide Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 I have a chance to purchase a Fender Bassman 50 half stack amp. The date code on the transformers makes it a 1972. It does come with a 2x12 cab. Both head and cab are in mint condition, no rust or scratches. It's been sitting not being used since the 80's. So I think it'll need the caps replaced. It does have the grounded three prong plug. Asking price is $600.00. Does this sound like a good deal? I don't need the amp I'm just thinking it would be cool to have a clean sounding vintage Fender amp. It would get used at home only.
DetroitBlues Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Heck ya! That's a great price! As long as it all works and doesn't need any work on the inside. Does he have a chasis pic to show you?
Guest HRB853370 Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Looks like a great bedroom amp to me Todd!! Go for it! If it doesnt work out, I am sure somebody at PSP would snap it up from you!
Billgelder Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Great price even if you have the caps replaced. I have a Bassman 70 that I use just for recording. I love the clean sound, and if you crank it up it will growl like a Leslie.
Glide Posted March 8, 2013 Author Posted March 8, 2013 Don't have any chassis pics but the transformer number is 606-705 so I believe the 5th week of 1972. The guy says it sounds great no popping noise, clean. I"m going there tomorrow morning at 11 to check it out. Thanks for your inputs and if there is anything else I should look for while I'm there please let me hear your suggestions. Thanks Again, Todd
jmac Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 I see the Bassman 50 head around Austin for $450 to $650. With a cab $800 to $900. Its a good deal..
Gitfiddler Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Looks like its in great condition. Here's more info on it: http://ampwares.com/amplifiers/fender-bassman-silverface/

yoslate Posted March 9, 2013 Posted March 9, 2013 Have a '67 Bassman. Nothing it won't do, from warm, woody archtop, to crunchy goodness. Wonderful piece of hardware! Gave $500 for just the head...and worth it.
Glide Posted March 9, 2013 Author Posted March 9, 2013 So I went to the guys house and test drove the amp....WOW!!!! No popping noise, no hiss, all the channels and functions work, very clean tone. The cable for the head to cabinet is original and looks brand new. The head cover says Fender Bassman. This thing is in great shape very clean. He is the second owner and bought it in the early 80's. He said he thinks it still has the original tubes. Date stamp in the chassis reads Richard Smith May 8, 1972. Here are a few pics. Thanks everyone for you inputs. I paid $600.00 http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7439_zps759e0b7d.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7440_zpsf0af655d.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7441_zps7326855c.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7443_zps0feb1c2b.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7448_zps1767be1a.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7458_zps3b807704.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7461_zps9c0ce293.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7462_zpsbb333a4f.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7463_zpse4d23868.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7464_zpsd2fc4fa6.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7467_zpse7b8e4d6.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7467_zpse7b8e4d6.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7468_zpscb7e85a8.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7469_zpsd0d0a69e.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7470_zps9bc72814.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7471_zps3a269528.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7478_zps212abf15.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7484_zpsdcc25ca0.jpg http://i1310.photobucket.com/albums/s648/glide069/DSCN7479_zpscafc74a2.jpg

Still learning.
Glide Posted March 9, 2013 Author Posted March 9, 2013 You need a bass guitar to go with it Glide? I got one! I would love to Will but I have to slow down.
bolero Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 congrats!! very nice old fender, you don't see amny around. at 50w I bet it has all the clean headroom you'd need for gtr, and is a great platform for pedals
Gitfiddler Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 That's one of those epic deals you go on to tell folks about later in life. Congratsssss!
Glide Posted March 11, 2013 Author Posted March 11, 2013 Thanks for the congrats. This thing sounds amazing! Looking at the schematics I got online and comparing it to the amp it looks like I have a AB165 circuit with AA371 balance bias control, but the circuit is called a AA371.
