je00143 Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I took my little Gibson hollowbody to band rehearsal last night instead of my 575. Everybody LOVED the sound. It is a single P-90, well aged (1958). I noticed that the 535s are laminated instead of solid (feedback?). Anybody done that? Am I crazy? Am I just better off buying a used 525? Just thinking about it, that's all. All ideas and comments accepted. Thankyouverymuch.
H Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Soapbar P90s won't fit a humbucker route and I suspect it would be an expensive job for your guitar. There are several varieties of P90-type sound available in a humbucker-sized package: SD Phat Cats, BK Mississippi Queens amongst the best of them. I have Phat Cats in my 535 and love the noise they make.
big bob Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I have Duncan p-rails in my 575. You should check them out. Once I had them installed I have never even entertained anything else!
bobmeyrick Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I have Duncan p-rails in my 575. You should check them out. Once I had them installed I have never even entertained anything else! +1 on the P-Rails. I put a pair into my 150 Special and they make it a very versatile guitar, particularly if you use the Triple Shot mounting rings. The options are coils in series (normal humbucker), P90 coil, Rail coil (traditional single coil), coils in parallel. The advantage of using the Triple Shot rings is that you can get any of those options separately on each pickup.
yoslate Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I have Phat Cats in my 535 and love the noise they make. +1.5 on the Phat Cats!
Number8 Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I have Phat Cats in my Millie and P90s in my 137. If you want to replicate the P90 sound without modifying your guitar, Phat Cats get very close to the P90 sound.
SouthpawGuy Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Another vote for P-Rails, have them in a 576, a 535 and a 170. Lots of tones for not a lot of bones
MartyGrass Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I had a H575 that had dog ear P90s in it and the humbuckers removed. It's not a difficult job installing them. A competent luthier can do it. Here's a post on that guitar. http://www.heritageownersclub.com/forums/topic/12000-h575-with-lollar-p-90s-for-sale/
PunkKitty Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I have a set of Rose custom wound HB sized P90s for sale. http://www.heritageownersclub.com/forums/topic/21844-fs-pickups-a-lot-of-them/
mark555 Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 535's and 555's are semi solid, so the feedback is greatly reduced. I have used my 555 at high volumes without any problems. Yes, the are layered like a 335 top, only much better, with a nice layer of flame maple on top. Kuz has a fabulous 535 in wineburst with P90's, I have never seen any guitar more beautiful. If you want one, go for it.
TalismanRich Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 It can be done. This one has Kent Armstrong 90s in it. It was originally with Humbuckers. Its in Sonar's gallery, you can check out other shots of it there.
michaeljames Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 i just sold a H150 with RioGrande 'Bastard & Fat Bastard' HB sized P90s which I like ~ but PunkKittys offer is unbeatable IMO www.riograndepickups.com
