H-150pics and clips

Oh, I wasn't implying that anyone didn't like it, I was just saying I don't have a problem with it. It sounds a little thin to me, too, but I chalked that up to the recording environment. The other two didn't sound a whole lot thicker, either. At least not on my speakers.  And, by the way, love the look of your guitar!

I must say that I like a thin 150/157/ Les Paul type of tone, ala Peter Green, played with a minimum of overdrive.

A lot of players, myself included  :P, like nothing better than to let rip with a searing solo and forget about the guitars role in the song, that is to back the melody, not to dump all over it.

I find that increasingly I tend to "switch off" and not listen to a lot of solos, I hear the notes but they are just that, notes not music.

Don't get me wrong I like RDs playing in the clips, nice touch and feel.

..  just my 2 cents worth as they say.

Your setup sounds thinner than a LP through a 5E3, is it because of the Peter Greene mod?

Hey Wingnut,

The blues Jam clip IS thin because of the "Peter Green mod" - It's in the middle position with the pickups out of phase.

BUT, you can blend with the volume knobs to go from super skinny (Like said clip), or have more neck pickup added and have it fatter.

I really DO like getting what I like to call a skinny tone with this type of guitar and "working it" to try and make some music.

The second clip is on the thin side too I guess?

I'd call it a cutting tone - maybe a little too much - to slice through everything and let other instruments/sounds be heard.

This clip is in the middle position too, but I don't have the magnet flipped.

Hi,

No offense taken to any comments about my playing and tone, or lack thereof. It's all good.

Getting the sounds I want to hear in my own recordings is tough, it's a work in progress.

And thanks again to ALL for such a nice welcome.

Oh, the hardware is chrome I believe - its a GOTOH bridge and tail piece-aluminum? that came stock on the guitar.

AND for shits and giggles, here's a pic from a gig a couple months back

As far as being thin and cutting, from my experience I bet that has alot more to do with that aluminum tail piece, now that you mention it, than the Peter Green mod.  Just check out my recent other thread on aluminum tailpieces and listen to the comparison clips.

finally listened out the sound clips. Moody music, amazing vintage sound! U shook me! :) Thanks for posting here!

Myself having Gi Historic 57 Plus in bridge and SD 59 in neck. Both push/pulls tone knobs switch coils for a parallel/in series mode. And lower volume knob push/pull split out a coil in all 3 the toggle positions. Makes some sense !

$.02:  "Thin"  I'm not sure what this means in some of the posts. Seems to have a negative connotation, though I'm sure not intended as negatively critical.  I hear out-of-phase humbuckers on a guitar which is turned down, going straight into an amp, sans pedals.  I hear the lost art of dynamics.  What a concept!  The "Peter Green tone"?  Rude has it cold.  Listen to Long Grey Mare  from Fleetwood Mac's BBC sessions.  Want that tone?  Simple: just flip that magnet around; done!  The tailpiece's composition is immaterial.  Dynamics?  Listen to A Fool No More, same recording.  Want to serve the tune and get attention when it's your turn to solo?  Look at the band, make that hand gesture to the floor, and turn it down....  ...sorry, I'll get off it now.  Thanks again for the post Rude.

The tailpiece's composition is immaterial.

That statement is just ignorant.  The tonal difference between a heavy zinc and lw aluminum tailpiece is as much different as any pickup swap (of very differing pickups I might add). I'll agree as far as the clips go, that it doesn't really matter at this point.  I never judged or commented on the clips or called the tone thin, I just made a comment about the tailpiece when Rude Dog mentioned that spec in his recent post.

Ignorant being stated as immaterial to the type of hardware on the guitar.

Which doesn't matter at this point in the discussion regarding the tonal quality of the clips but is influenced by said hardware nontheless.

The Sheptones are great. The bridge pup sounds/works way better in this guitar - full and clear. The middle position really gets a sweet honk thing going.

I also got different magnets to swap in and try out. I ended up with A-4s in neck and bridge.

I have a set of Sheptones also, with standard A5's.  Shep did send me an A4 to try out and I have an older A2 on hand as well.

What did you like about the A4's that you stuck with them, how do they sound different than the A5's?

I've always heard A4's are the perfect balance between an A2 and A5.

Thanks. Your setup sounds cool. I don't think I've ever had a chance to play a guitar with coil splitting.

I would think the tail piece and all the hardware does have an effect on tone. I have not swapped any hardware ever myself, but have read a lot about people liking aluminum tail pieces on particular guitars and zinc on others. Same thing with tuners - high mass (like grovers) verses low mass tuners  (like stamped klusons).

Hey Rattler - nice looking 150!  Did SD just happen to be in the store when you picked it up, or is he part of that store?  Pretty cool getting to play Beck's Tele, too.  Did you pick some of 'Cause We Ended as Lovers'?    ;D

To me, the A5s have a lot of chime. A2s have a softer sound and attack , but not the chime of A5.

A4s seem to share some qualities of both - a good balance between A2 and A5.

I've had the Sheptones for over a year, and every month or 2 I'd swap magnets and or do the magnet flip. I like the sound of all of them, but have stuck with the A4s because they are kind of in between the 2 others to my ears.

Peace.

im thinking doing a peter green mod to my h150, or wire it up like jimmy page les paul, ill probably do it to my next h150 light weight, i have these great pickups from wolftone pickups, he used vintage magnets out of some old p-90s to make these great humbuckers for me, i had them in a guild bluesbird and it was awesome, will be even beter in the heritage.

Alright, Here's a couple more clips or pieces thereof with different tones

These are not thin; they're short and thick - kinda like a tuna can  :)

- not the best or complete, but what the hay.

It's be cool if anyone else wants to post pics or clips.
