Pickup questions for H-170

So I know there are already a ton of posts about what pickups everyone likes, but
i have a some questions about a couple specific models and if anyone has had
any experience with them in a H 170.

I bought a used (1999 i believe) H-170 a few years ago and have been very happy with it overall,
however the Schaller pickups in it can be a little harsh sounding to me at
times, so i am looking at replacing them. I am looking for something fairly versatile....its
very important to me that i can get a good clean sound out of my guitars, but i
mostly have been using my heritage for blues, blues rock, classic rock type
stuff .... I do like some heavier music so something that could handle some Mastodon
and Motorhead riffs would be great, but that is not my priority with this
guitar.

I have been looking at three different sets of pickups in three different price
ranges and wanted to know if anyone has had any experience with these in a
H-170 or if you could make another recomendation that would be great.

1)Dimarzio 36th anniversary PAF - I can get a set of these for $130 and have heard
some great things about them.

2)Seymour Duncan Alnico II Slash Models - These seem to go for about $185 for the
set

3)Lindy Fralin Humbuckers - At $260 for a set these are really pushing by budget,
but if they are worth the price over the other two then i would rather just go with
these.

Thanks a bunch in advance for the help and advice

I have a set of the Dimarzios. They are very, very good pickups. I like them a lot. They are one of my favorite mass produced pickups.

Unfortunately you missed out on a set. I just sold a used set a few days ago. But I will soon be listing a set of zebra Gibson Burstbuckers and chrome handwound Porter Classics. Let me know if you are interested in either set. I will likely sell them for about what a new set of Dimarzios cost or less.

From what you state above, the Burstbuckers would be a nice option IMHO.

I've never had the Fralins. Would like to try some one day. I've had the Slash pickups in my old 150 and I really liked them. They would do all of the music you mentioned.

I also had the Dimarzio 36th anniversary pickups in a guitar that I sold. Very nice as well. I think they would do the trick too.

The Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz combination is what I use in my "Metal" guitars right now, a 1985 Kramer and 1982 Guild Nova, and I love those. They are really versital in my opinion. You can still get very bluesy with them.

I have the stock Schallers in my current 157 and I like those. I understand what you're saying about the harshness though. If I had the money I would love to try some Fralins or WCR pickups.

Hope that helped? I tend to ramble:). I do think all of the options above would work for you.

Thanks for the responses!

PunkKitty - i PMed you about the burstbuckers

Shook94 - (or anyone else who cares to answer) what would you say the biggest difference between the Dimarzios and the Slash model pickups and what did you notice was the difference between the dimarzios and the Schallers?

Thanks again
