Pilgrim Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Howdy folks, I've had this '86 H-170 for about 8 years now. I figured I'd show it to y'all and see if you could provide any more information on it. Thing is, I've never seen another model like it and can find no record of such a model ever existing. According to the guy I bought it from, it originally had only a piezo pickup located under the bridge. Because this guy played mostly metal, he decided to cut into the wood and install one humbucker and a switch to split the coils. Because I think it's an exceedingly rare guitar, possibly even a prototype of some sort, I wish it was still in it's original unaltered condition. But alas, this is how I bought it, and I love it dearly anyway. It's a great guitar. Hope y'all enjoy and can provide some more information on it!
gpuma Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 It was built on Dec 30th (or 31st?), 1986 and it was the 2nd guitar built on that day. Never seen that configuration. I also do not know what "True PU" means. "SPL" i think means Special but I defer to the forum's gurus
y2kc Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Very nice freak Heritage. When I say freak I mean "Holy cow is that cool! That is very nice. I have seen a one pu H-140 so I guess these things were custom orders cus prototypes rarely left the shop. Y2kc
Thundersteel Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Might need to get ahold of the factory for that one!
H Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 Did the original owner install an additional pot? 170s typically have two volumes and one tone as this one seems to. That would be unnecessary on a single pickup guitar. I'd like to see a control cavity shot to unravel the mystery a little more. Very unusual 170, whatever its provenance. Welcome to the HOC
LucSulla Posted April 4, 2013 Posted April 4, 2013 The howdy and big ass ring makes me suspicious that you are an Aggie :-pOf course, there are many big ass rings out there non-Aggie related.

Welcome to the HOC I don't think he installed any additional pots. But the way he left it configured, the 2nd tone control is not connected to anything. I'll take a couple more shots later when I get home from work. The control cavity ain't much for looks, but everything works! I used this setup live for years in a worship band, and was always pleased with it's tone and power.
