Sugar Posted May 15, 2013 Author Posted May 15, 2013 What are the three square things left to right. I know the one on the right says mercury magnetics. NOt sure what the brand of the first two are and whether they are power or output trannies.
Gitfiddler Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Wow, what a simple and clean chassis!! I read somewhere (likely TGP) that Paul C. used custom transformers for his Heritage amps. If others know more about them, please chime in.
Sugar Posted May 15, 2013 Author Posted May 15, 2013 What do the specs mean when it says this amp has two power supplies? Are they built into the one power transformer?
drfie Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Here is a cut and paste of the amp specs. Punch and Sag have different PT secondaries and rectifiers to give different preamp and power tube voltages. That is the "two power supplies." (Caveat: I've never played one before.) Standby / Punch /Sag: This patent applied for circuit selects between two separate power supplies in the amplifier. Each setting uses it’s own high voltage winding and rectifiers along with different amounts of power supply filtering, preamp and bias voltages. The “Punch” setting is unique in that it is designed to respond with a 2 tube 50 watt output section like the power supplies used in the 100watt amps respond with 4 tubes. This setting produces a punchier and more muscular sound along the lines of a classic British 100 watt amp then what is normally found in a 50 watt design. The “Sag” setting uses a different power supply winding along with a tube rectifier, lower values of filtering, and higher preamp voltages to produce a looser vintage sound and feel. The amp comes stock biased for EL34’s, but can also use 6L6 tubes with a simple bias adjustment
H Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 What do the specs mean when it says this amp has two power supplies? Are they built into the one power transformer? Can you post a pic of the back of the chassis where the power cable attaches please? Maybe there's a voltage switch there so it can be used in different regions.
drfie Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Maybe there's a voltage switch there so it can be used in different regions. I don't think so. Read the specs above.
drfie Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 No power switching on the back. The front of the amp is the Sag/Standby/Punch switch. This is a pic from a CL ad posted here some time ago.
big bob Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Ive not seen this movie you speek of, "The Coloinal". My assumption would be the tranies are women trapped in mens bodys, chicks with D@#@s. HMMMMMM... SAG PUNCH my guess would be SAG = tube recto punch = solid state recto.
big bob Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 OR.... could be SAG = cathode bias punch = fixed bias
drfie Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Here is a pic off the Gear Page purporting to be a Colonial Gut shot. IF that is true, and I suspect it is, you can clearly see the SS rectifier coexisting peacefully with a tube rectifier. So I'd say the Big Bob option number one, minus the salacious content, is somewhere in the ballpark.
big bob Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 looks like a coupple of big ol wire wound resistors as well... they screem cathode bias to me. my guess is for sag you get a tube recto with a cathode bias and for punch you get a ss recto and fixed bias. Brian, Bhulere, anybody?
big bob Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 as for the question of trannies http://www.logotv.com/shows/rupauls_drag_race/season_1/series.jhtml

Brian, Bhulere, anybody? I'd agree to a point - tube rectifier for sag, SS for punch. Aren't these designed so you can swap tube types? In that case, you'd need to be able to set the bias and also adjust heater filament draw.

drfie Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Well, if you look again you can definitely see a small diode towards the front of the amp,so I'm thinking that it may be adustable fixed bias in at least one mode, likely punch. Also I think those big wire wound resistors are on the screens, and are not part of the cathode bias system.
kbp810 Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 The small diodes in front of the big filter caps are the SS rectifier part. Looks like the power transformer has two separate power leads; one going to the diods, and the other going to the rectifier tube. This is just a guess, but I would assume that the leads are rated accordingly so that the SS and the Tube recto both have approximately the same end result voltage (with the tube recto leads being a slightly higher voltage to account for the voltage drop across the tube). That would account for not having to re-bias between each mode. It's adjustable/fixed bias
