bolero Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 dammit, the drummer threw a blanket over the back of my combo without telling me, at the end of the night the amp started cutting out & eventually died...I recall it being hot enough to cook an egg on but I didnt' pay it much heed anyone ever have an amp overheat? I'm hoping it just shut itself down...I haven't changed the power tubes in ~6 years or so, so its not a big deal if they're cooked I'm mostly concerned if the OT was in danger
bolero Posted May 31, 2013 Author Posted May 31, 2013 actually it wasn't a blanket, it was a wad of T shirts
tulk1 Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 He couldn't have said something to you? The only time I've had an amp shut down on me was an SWR Bass amp - solid state. Overheated and tripped a thermal. But I don't think tube amps share that amenity.
HANGAR18 Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Drummers! Get a rope! I guess the moral of the story is to always look for a drummer who is also a Heritage guitar owner who also own tube amplifiers to be in your band.
DetroitBlues Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Wish I could help out, but I've got nothing....keep us posted on how it turns out...
Billgelder Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 What amp is it? I have blown up a few in my days. There is a great amp guy in Melbourne Fl I uses. He has been able to fix them all but the one that caught on fire. Marshalls and Budweiser don't mix well.

bolero Posted June 1, 2013 Author Posted June 1, 2013 haha I have been lucky so far...but I once melted an OT in a 20w amp; it had an internal short that may have been initiated by a previous owner...I am religious about not powering up my amps unless they have a speaker load hooked up!! hoping 212mavguy pips in here...he seems very knowledgable. otherwise I will fire it up & see what happens. I have a good amp repair guy nearby as well
Billgelder Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 It must be the smoke that makes an amp work. Because when all the smoke comes out they don’t work anymore.
big bob Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 It must be the smoke that makes an amp work. Because when all the smoke comes out they don’t work anymore. Apparently that is also true for shop vacs as well! Mine passed this weekend!
tbonesullivan Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 So... what the heck was the reason for blocking up the back of the amp? Did he not like the sound coming out from there? maybe you should fill all his drums with T shirts and see how he likes it.

Why on earth? Did he even give you a justification? Was the amp chilly and needed warming? Freakkin stupid drummers!!!
Guest HRB853370 Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 actually it wasn't a blanket, it was a wad of T shirts Oh that makes you feel better eh? Detune his drum heads to the point of them crinkling when he is not paying attention...........

Freakkin stupid drummers!!! he said the sound out of the back of the speaker was making it hard for him to sing, which was true as he's the main vocalist when we jammed, the amp was always across the room from him no biggie I hope it just shut itself down
212Mavguy Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 haha I have been lucky so far...but I once melted an OT in a 20w amp; it had an internal short that may have been initiated by a previous owner...I am religious about not powering up my amps unless they have a speaker load hooked up!! hoping 212mavguy pips in here...he seems very knowledgable. otherwise I will fire it up & see what happens. I have a good amp repair guy nearby as well OUCH! This is SO wrong...amp death by bandmate...I once had one amp die on me after getting it too hot, it was left on for three hours with a bad heater connection block, that connector block started resisting current, it got hot, the PT eventually overheated and died. That's (sight unseen) the most likely suspect...the power tranny. When I suspect that something in my amp is about to poop the bed, I deliberately run it to failure. That means smell the smoke. Sometimes I take the chassis out to see where the smoke is going to come from when I plug it back in...still hooked up to the speaker. Better to have something well charred to more easily spot and better to have outright killed it than to have something intermittently working. I also run my own soldering iron and repair my amps most of the time. So fire it up and see if it works, if not, and the PT is bad, you are looking at 130-200 bucks to have a tech replace the PT, and /or a decision whether to get a new amp or not.
