NAD: Peavey RENOWN, with a throw-in MIA Peavey Predator

My snicker-thread about Peaveys in Pawn shops got the last laugh on me. DBetts mentioned that the Peavey Renown was a Rockin' amp. It intrigued me, and I tried to think WHERE I had seen one. It turns out two different pawn shops in Peoria, IL, where I work frequently, had one. The worse of the two was listed at $299, and didn't even work when I plugged it in. The much cleaner option, with casters installed, worked quite well, and was a lot cleaner example, listed at $199 out the door. I couldn't really wind it up to it's potential in the shop, but it was clear it would be a decent Solid State amp, ubiquitous scratchy pots and all. Rated at 450 Watts (WTF?!) on the label, I've seen it listed as a 200 watt amp. Whatever, a 2-12 amp, it's loud as hell. It's got a relatively complicated control section, and can be made to sound quite bad, OR, pretty darn good. It definitely needs to be tweaked to give up the goods. Quite a bit darker and less articulate than the DRRI it is pictured next to. I offered $200 out the door for the amp AND the MIA Peavey Predator I auditioned it with. They took it. Not a keeper, but I had some fun at very high volumes earlier today.

Not bad. Those solid state Peavey amps may not be the best at anything, but they are pretty solid. I've seen a lot of 20 year old Peavey amps that were still kickin', and the guitar has a lot of potential, replace the electronics and you have a guitar that sounds and plays good and you don't have to worry about beating it up.
