Who has used them and what do you think?

Chi Wah Wah?

I had the Chi Wah Wah for a while. It functioned perfectly. Not sure why I moved it on. :icon_scratch:

Personally, when it comes to wah, having a full size to really feel the heal to toe motion is very important. I'm not sure if the same can be said about the mini wah's.

Josh, way back when ......... the wah pedal was the only effect we had. Yeah, loved the full feel of the pedal under the foot. The weight ... uh, not so much. The Chi was pretty cool, once I got used to it. It's like any other device. Once you learn how to use it, it works fine. For me, it's a lot like amplifiers. Used to be the bigger the better. Now, I can get it all done with a much lighter rig. Same for the wah. I like that some have finally figured out how to get that same effect in a manageable pedal.

I had the Chi Wah wah . Sold it to Tulk.

Now I've got the Japanese Girl Mini Wah - small foot print, light, works just fine. I think I just don't like that when I engage it, it gets all trebly. Don't all wahs do that? Maybe I have it on the wrong setting - really don't use it much. May sell it someday just for that reason.

Don't have any experience with mini wahs but there may be an internal trim pot for adjustment ?

actually - that could be true. Gd suggestion!

Had a DOD FX17 wah / volume pedal a long time back that had trim pots accessible via holes in the chassis. That was a small wah pedal, although probably large compared to mini wahs.

I bet I could build one, been busy lately with some other projects but I might try to build my own mini wah now that you guys have inspired me. I think the rocker would have to be pretty high from the case or it would have to be spring loaded and mounted at one end to get the travel, how bout it, the ones you guys had spring loaded?

I used to love a spring-loaded what I had back in the day called purple haze (case was purple) but I don't think they're made anymore. It doesn't seem anybody puts a spring in them anymore. I'd prefer a spring in mine.

I'm not sure whether I'll actually try to build one or not, got a lot on my plate right now, but the physics problem with building a "mini" wah is that even though the case and rocker are smaller, the pot still needs the same travel, so if the rocker is mounted like a normal pedal, it would need to be farther from the case, and have more room to travel, this might present another problem, you might not be able to rock your foot that far without tippy toeing, if I were to mount the rocker on one end,( most likely the heel) and mount a spring under the other end you could get the same travel on the pot without rocking the pedal as far. You could also work out some sort of gear system so that the pot got more rotation from less physical travel. I would like to check one out for curiousity's sake.

It's an interesting challenge, and since I never really intended to build and market effects it would just be a sort of design experiment for me.

Usually the switch is at the front of the pedal, and is engaged when the pedal is pushed fully forward, which is when the pedal is at its most trebly. Surely you keep moving your foot as soon as you've switched it on to get the wah-wah effect? Unless of course you're going for the Frank Zappa technique of finding the sweet spot for feedback and keeping it there - rather like a parametric EQ.

If i understand correctly, Chi Wah Wah works in reverse, bass first and engages with your heel on the floor, toe on the pedal. just pulled the trigger on a used one. will report back upon try out.

That is correct. And once you wrap your head around that you're using your toes and not your whole foot, it's a breeze. Same action as a classic design, actually. Press with the toe it goes Treble, rock back it's Bass. All in the size of a Boss pedal. Pretty ingenious. Again, not entirely sure why I flipped Koula's. It's a cool little box.
