MrB Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Does anyone have experience with Ceriatone amps? They (as seen on U-Tube) seem to have a nice dumble overdrive, but I can't find anything about the clean channel. If it's a good imitation of a blackface Fender sound, I could be sold. And then there's the thing about paying the import duty when it arrives at your door. Even when you buy from a dealer. Sounds strange. Mr B
GuitArtMan Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 They seem to be fairly well received over at TGP. Great bacg-for-the-buck and more than a few different styles to choose from. I don't have any personal experience with them though.
bobmeyrick Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 I have a Ceriatone OTS plus C-lator (effects loop buffer) and I'm very happy with it. I bought mine used off eBay, but the seller was not far from me so I was able to try it before bidding. A few seconds after plugging in my H150 I decided I had to have it, and fortunately I was the only bidder! The clean sound is warm and full and there's a lot of available variation, with the "Bright", "Deep" and "Rock/Jazz" switches. The only slight drawback for me was the lack of reverb, but I was able to get a Peavey Valverb (again off eBay) which resides in case with the C-lator (which I got from Tonehenge amplification in Germany). For my needs it's perfect.
212Mavguy Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 I have a Marsh Overlord 50 head, which is a US assembled C-tone OTS with American Mercury and Heyboer iron. Also C-tone 50w HRM head and 100w SSS head. These are clones of three Dumble circuit variants, and they all have been wonderful sounding, versatile, reliable, eminently giggable amps. Also have the C-lator and it does its thang VERY well, and not only with a D-clone, it works in the loop of other amps of mine. Have driven quite a variety of cabs with these Ceriatones. There is a Ceriatone forum. They all kicked my Siegmund Midnight Blues out of ruling my dozen plus amp roost, and that takes some VERY serious tone to even be mentioned in the same paragraph with the Siegmund. Tube and Speaker up a C-tone appropriately for the model and you will be floored.
bolero Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 I did a shootout with my vox AC30cc2, my ceriatone DC30 ( which comes with the same spec iron as the real matchless ) and a buddies real '63 non top boost AC30 with vintage alnico's the DC30 & real AC30 were neck and neck the cc2 was good sounding but couldn't hang with either of them
MrB Posted July 8, 2013 Author Posted July 8, 2013 Thanks gents, Ceriatone recently came out with a 20 watt D-Style, the OTS Mini 20, which looks interesting. I'll also take a look at the Marsh FSX-30. Mr B
MrB Posted July 11, 2013 Author Posted July 11, 2013 I spoke with the folks at Marsh about the size of the FSX-30. The head, shown on their website, weighs 55 lbs. Thay can do a combo version, but the weight would be way above the easily portable amp I'm looking for. Fuchs makes some sweet D-style amps, the Overdrive Supreme series, but these are also heavy. Their newer Blackjack-21 II looks like a good option. But now dealers near me to try one out. Mr B
212Mavguy Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 55 pounds for a 30 watt head does not sound right. Especially since I have a 50 watt Marsh D-clone that seems to weigh less than that. I'd say 35-45 pounds is more like what mine feels like. Did you actually hear them say 55 pounds?
MrB Posted July 13, 2013 Author Posted July 13, 2013 Mav, I 'spoke' them via email, so the 55 is in writing. Yes, it does seem overly heavy. But it was Denise Marsh who responded. And she who said the combo would be 'very heavy'. Mr B
212Mavguy Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 Will see if I can find someone with a scale. I'm thinking 55 pounds is about right for a 100 watt head. I've got a 50 watter, no way a 30 watter is gonna have bigger iron. And Denise doesn't build the amps, I'm sure.
