New Eagle Day

I've picked up some company for my OSB Golden Eagle, an 11 year older sister in AN finish from 1999. A few dings, cracked binding and markings around the strap lock button show it's a player guitar but overall it is in good condition. No cracks in the wood, no repairs. What I really wanted is a P90 GE but they just don't exist on the used market so this one with a Duncan Phat Cat seemed a good choice. Acoustically it is much louder than the other GE, maybe because it has been played a lot all those years or also because of only one pickup dampening the top. The neck is slightly thinner, as has been said in other threads that the necks have become beefier lately. It still plays fine, although I prefer the neck of the other one. Plugged in its tone doesn't really differ much from the other GE with HRWs, the single coil just makes it a little brighter. Maybe I will swap the Phat Cat for a Lollar CC or Vintage Vibe HCC one day. And the next strings will be roundwounds, to compliment the great acoustic sound of the guitar and to increase the difference of both guitars. It's a lovely pair, I think.

Two questions:

Could the Phat Cat be the original pickup? There is no information about the pickup on the label.

Has anybody seen this guitar before and knows something about its story? You never know, a previous owner might lurk around here.

Seymour Duncan and Hamer Work to Make the World a Little "Phatter"

Seymour Duncan Releases Production Version of Phat Cat™ Pickup

Friday, January 9, 2004
Santa Barbara, California - In the past, if a guitar player wanted true P-90 soapbar tone from a humbucker-equipped guitar, he or she would have to physically alter the guitar: Usually irreparably and often destroying the re-sale value of the instrument.

Those days are over as Seymour Duncan announces the release of the Phat Cat pickup. Phat Cats are true P-90 soapbar pickups squeezed into a humbucker cover. They are direct retrofits for most humbucker-equipped guitars, without need for permanent modification to the instrument.

Phat Cats were created as a collaborative effort between Hamer founder, Jol Dantzig and Seymour W. Duncan. They were originally built in Seymour's Custom Shop for Hamer Guitars where they were used exclusively on their Newport series of USA-made instruments. Now, Phat Cats will be built on Duncan's regular production line, which will increase production capacity and decrease the selling price. Says Dantzig, "We worked with Seymour Duncan to conceive Phat Cats, and now we're happy to see the opportunity for all of Duncan's customers to enjoy their great sound."

Phat Cats are the call for the player looking for a great combination of output and high-end response. The tone is big, fat, and punchy with enhanced upper-mids for extra "cut." Like traditional P-90s, Phat Cats embody a true single coil design with two sand cast Alnico magnets and single conductor, braided shield, hookup cable. The short, flat bobbins account for the fatter, midrange-intensive tone; and the nickel-silver cover reduces 60-cycle hum and tames the raggedness sometimes associated with P-90s. The result is a pickup with a unique sonic signature. Phat Cats are available in neck and bridge calibrated positions, and with either nickel or gold plating on their nickel-silver cover. When used together in the neck-plus-bridge position, both pickups will be hum-canceling.

Phat Cats are vacuum wax potted for squeal-free performance. Mounting hardware (screws and springs) is included, as is a detailed wiring diagram. Phat Cats are hand built in Santa Barbara, California. ""

Hey, that's good to know, thanks! So the Duncan is a replacement already, just as I thought. The original pup probably has been a Schaller.

I love Phat Cats.

Wow, that is beautiful to say the least. Enjoy. What finish? Antique natural, Golden Amber maybe?
