HANGAR18 Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Does anyone happen to know... 1. if Heritage ever shipped out their guitars using Gibson Custom Shop guitar cases instead of the Heritage cases we now see these days? 2. If someone can just buy a Heritage guitar case brand new? My 1999 H157 that I bought used was sent to me with a Gibson Custom Shop guitar case so I'm scratching my head a little bit as to how that might have happened. I think I'd rather have a Heritage case, or maybe just buy a strong flight case for it and paint "The Heritage" on it.
TalismanRich Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Some dealers, most notably, Ed Roman, liked to use a generic TKL, instead of buying the labeled case. It saved him a few bucks. Most likely, the original Heritage case was either damaged, or replaced. I'm sure they would never use a Custom Shop case, but the previous owner may have switched to one. You should see what you can get for the CS case and apply that to ordering a replacement from Heritage.
davesultra Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Pretty much what everybody else has said. Jay Wolfe use to send them out in Axcess cases. My '06 150 originally came from Wolfe Guitars, and has the Axcess case. It's actually a bit sturdier than the ones "H" usually uses. However, you don't get a "The Heritage" logo. There is a brand new one on ebay that I had considered pulling the trigger on a few times (just cuz I want the logo). Here's the link. http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-HERITAGE-LP-SHAPE-ELECTRIC-HARDSHELL-CASE-/350667202615?pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item51a564e037
SouthpawGuy Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Some models used the Axcess case, the 137 is one, my '06 137 came from Wolfe Guitars originally.
gpuma Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 I bought a Heritage case from the plant. It wasn't cheap but it was not crazy either
garyyamane Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 There are definitely better cases out there than the factory case but if you need the logo...........
totonka Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 I also bought a case from the factory. Quite reasonable, I think!
Kuz Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Heritage cases often come from the factory with "The Heritage" logo. If the case are on back order, often they don't come with the logo on them. But no, they don't use Gibson cases. I think the factory cases are quite serviceable and as good as any.
bolero Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Heritage uses TKL hardshell cases....I saw a skid of them at the factory last year so it might be a bit cheaper to order from TKL or MF etc they are great, solid cases made of wood AFAIK Gibson alos uses them ps is that THE Steve Hoffman?? if so, great to see you hear ( pun ) I love all your work

My '03 150 has a TKL non Heritage branded case and the '03 157 has the same case with Heritage logo. Could be wrong but I think the 137s got the Axcess case because of the thinner body. You could get a Heritage logo vinyl sticker ... http://www.heritageownersclub.com/forums/topic/22920-heritage-vinyl-stickers-order-thread/
HANGAR18 Posted July 13, 2013 Author Posted July 13, 2013 There are some good ideas in this thread and I think that I may just part with tradition. I recently bought a very strong TSA approved, brand new SKB case from Guitar Center for the bass guitar I just bought from Will. It seems to be a very good case, so I think I should buy another one of those SKB cases from GC, artistically render a Heritage logo onto the case with gold paint and then sell the Gibson Custom Shop case to offset the cost of the replacement project.

Lets test that TSA case out! Ship that bass to me via United Airlines and I will ship it back!
skbaily Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 > 1. if Heritage ever shipped out their guitars using Gibson Custom Shop guitar cases instead of the Heritage cases we now see these days? I have an older H555 (1988 I believe) that came with that I was told was the original case. It was just like a Gibson Custom Shop cases, but with no label. The case is brown, and it has pink lining, and an extra flap of material that covers the top of the instrument, etc. My thought was that Heritage used the same supplier for a while, but had cases shipped without a logo on the outside. Either way, it's a really nice case.

randy2270 Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 There is a slim chance Joe V. at archtop.com has/get one or at least a vintage case that gets your fancy. For the money I would suggest a Gator case and then buy the logo separate. I was considering getting a new case for the Sweet 16 just because it didn't fit in real snug but the guy at Chuck Levins convinced me to disregard, "once you close the case it ain't going anywhere". I but some foam on the sides and kept on going. I would sell the gibson case online and get something better, then you will have a story to tell.

I had a '65 335 and when I bought my first 555 it was at least equal to the vintage 335, so I sold it for $12k and funded most of my Heritage collection. I will take a modern playing vintage sounding guitar over a vintage instrument any day. Now Vintage amps that's a different story....

I would rather have a brand new 2013 Mustang GT which looks like a 1968 Mustang GT than to have an actual 1968 Mustang GT.

DC Ron Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 They may also have used Harptone cases back in the day. I've had a couple of cases that were superficially similar to TKL but noticeably different in design and construction. Like this one sold by Elderly as a Harptone:

I got an SKB TSA case for an old Yamaha SBG a while back as the original case had deteriorated badly. While the SKB is a good case I much prefer the TKL or Axcess cases.
ezra1 Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 I just bought a Gibson R9 2013 Les Paul Standard. And I got a Custom built Heritage H-150 CM from Marv through Jay Wolfe with the Heritage logo case. The Heritage case is WAY better that the Gibson case. Hell the latches don't match up correctly.
