shook494 Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 I have the stock Schaller pickups in my 157 and I love them. I believe they are Golden 50's? I'm not doing super high gain with them. I have guitars with Seymour Duncans for that.
HANGAR18 Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Hi, new h150 owner . I might want to change pickups . What goes well with the heritages? I am thinking Gibson 57 classic neck and a 57 plus in the bridge. I never really bonded with Seymour's . So , that is my question. Thank you What amp are you using? That might make a big difference. I'm getting ready to install a set of pickups into one of the H157's which I've never seen anyone do before... and I'm not going to spill the beans until the deed is done... then I'll post photos. Bwah-Ha-Ha-Ha-Haaaaaaaah!
ezra1 Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 I have WCR Darkburst with the Green mod and push/ pull pot in my 2000 H-150 CM. It had Pearly Gates in it when I got it.And I never bonded with those in that guitar. My Custom build 2013 H-150 CM has a custom wind Fuelie set.Overwound A2 magnets.Cleans up well but dimed out early 70s classic rock tones.
holyroller Posted July 19, 2013 Author Posted July 19, 2013 I use retro rockitt 50 watt plexi heads. Using dirt boxes for that over the top sound. All styles of music , but mostly classic rock. But I do like a good sounding clean.

I don't like all of the SD pickups (some I dislike very much) but there are some that I do like. (BTW I have two H150's and two H157's) Perhaps you might try sampling different kinds of SD pickups till you find some that you like. Alex Skolnick has a signature model Heritage H-150 and he speaks highly of Seymour Duncan pickups.

Cajun Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Like a few others to the post - I am a huge Fralin fan. I recently put a set of Fralin Unbuckers in my H-150 - and could not be happier. I got the slightly hot versions (8k and 9k). They are unique in that one coil is wound more than the other (which is good for splitting, but I didn't add a split switch - don't like tapped humbuckers). It gives it a unique chime - sounds wonderful. I have owned over 75 guitars and this is as good as it gets for me in sound. I buy them used on eBay for $200 (for the set). It gives me nice Warren Haynes tones that I have been searching for awhile. Now if I could just play like him...
koula901 Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 +1 on Lindy Fralin's stuff!! +2 on Fralins - I've had 3 sets like all of them - not in a 150, waiting on another set for the legacy.
tbonesullivan Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 I have always had good experiences with Fralin pickups. They are just great pickups. You might want to fire off an email to see if they have recommendations.
ledzef Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Really like the Lollar Imperial High wind I put in my Les Paul neck. Thought it was a huge improvement over the Burstbucker pros it came with.
slider313 Posted July 25, 2013 Posted July 25, 2013 Fralin winds some great PAF flavored pickups as does Ian Anderson from Ian A. Guitars. Here's a link from The Gear Page:http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=1278633&highlight=pickups
mark555 Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 Just gave it a good cleaning, and took out the pickups, it has Duncan 59 set in it, anyone ever tried these? I have Duncan 59's in my 555, for no other reason that I disliked the stock schaller pups and came accross a pair of 59's so cheap I couldn't say no (I was very short on spare cash), so in they went. I get a very nice classy sound regardless of amp setting, They work well, give me what ever sound I want. I think they suit my guitar - can't afford anything else anyway so it's a case of making do, but you could do alot worse than have a pair of 59's.... But every one has their own holy grail of tone they are chasing....
mark555 Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 I Loved the Stock Schallers I had in my old 140..Sniff Sniff.. Smurph, it looks like you should have hung on to that 140.... It seems like they are beginning to acquire cult status here on the HOC!

cobrafast1 Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Just a suggestion. I put a set of ToneRiders with Alnico II magnets in my PRS SE Semi Hollow Body and they are dynamite. Lots of sustain with the weaker magnet, so it does not slow down the vibration of the strings. They are made by Andrew Cunningham in the U.K. Moderately priced and really nice. He has a very good reputation in the UK and Euro market. I did not regret buying them and love them in the PRS SE. Just a suggestion.

Just to clarify, Toneriders are designed by Andrew Cunningham in the U.K. They are built in Asia.

kidsmoke Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 But every one has their own holy grail of tone they are chasing.... word....and the reality is the p'ups are just ONE variable. I think any of 20 different PAF clones out there would cut it...coupled with the right pedal and amp. Billy Gibbons wouldn't sound like Billy Gibbons playing his Pearly Gates through a JC120.....
redshark Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 The best PAF pickups for H150 in my own experience are the Lindy Fralin pure PAF!! A little bit better than that are also Throbak DT102's but the price makes me believe the pure PAF's are a better deal!! The Throbaks sound better but not 220 better!!! (that is the diference in price 280 Vs 500). Other outstanding option is the WCR crossroads-darkburst set.
