r2dtuned Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Hello folks, I've been watching this forum for a little over a week after I saw this guitar. After reading and doing a little investigative reasearch I decided I need to have it! I bought it online from a store in Vermont and from what I can tell it's pretty much all original, with no breaks or repairs. I've been working on guitars for a little over 20 years so I'm fairly confident when I check out a instrument but that's why I'm posting this. I need you Heritage Pros to check it out for me as well and let me know what you think. The Grovers are a liitle too shiny so they might have been replaced (extra hole off of the side of each tuner) but under all of the cavities the pots and solder points look original. Great forum by the way and I look forward to some "tech talk" with some of you members. Gary
davesultra Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Looks like the one from Guitar Center. I was looking at that one last weekend. Tuning machines have been changed, but beyond that it looks pretty nice. Be careful though, Heritage guitars can be addictive! Enjoy, and welcome to the club!
SouthpawGuy Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Hi Gary and welcome to the HOC. The hardware is Schaller, (the bridge and tailpiece). Pickups also look to be Schallers .... the switch tip has a black dot which usually indicates the presence of Heritages own HRW pickups. HRWs didn't come about until the very late '90s or early '00s though, plus I've never seen uncovered HRWs. The switch tip might just be an anomaly.
r2dtuned Posted August 1, 2013 Author Posted August 1, 2013 @ davesultra, you are correct about the location of my purchase. @ SouthpawGuy, the dot is actually a small hole where the material has just given way. I pulled the pick ups as well and they are in fact Schaller. This guitar has alot of fretware and will be needing a fret job several years down the line but I set it up with the action fairly low and with minimal relief on the neck. I like them pretty straight.
golferwave Posted August 1, 2013 Posted August 1, 2013 Welcome to the HOC Gary! Looks like you scored a nice one there. After you've played the H-140 for a while you'll be looking for another Heritage, It can't be helped. Enjoy!
SouthpawGuy Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Forgot to mention the stinger is the black V often found on the back of the headstock of early Heritage guitars My own '86 H-170 ...
PrairieDude Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Welcome! It looks you've got a very nice start on your Heritage collection. I've only recently bought my first one, but there really is an addiction working here.
PunkKitty Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Welcome to the HOC, Gary. Congrats on your Heritage. A C serial number makes it an 86.
TalismanRich Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Good score Gary. That is a pretty typical example of an early 140. This is my 87 D serial number. Its a guitar that I really enjoy. I changed the pickups to SD Alnico Pro 2s because my Schallers just sounded dead (compared the the ones in my 157 and 535). It definitely a player, not a closet queen or museum piece!
r2dtuned Posted August 2, 2013 Author Posted August 2, 2013 Forgot to mention the stinger is the black V often found on the back of the headstock of early Heritage guitars My own '86 H-170 ... It does have the "Stinger". What a cool name for it as well! Thanks for all of the welcomes and kudos. I look forward to seeing more guitar eye candy on this forum. I'm pretty sure this will not be my only one as I prefer to have two guitars from the same manufacturer. I tell my wife its for back up
H Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Welcome to the HOC I'd recommend you take a look at the H-535, a beautiful and very functional expression of the late 50s ES-335, if you are already considering Heritage number two
