randy2270 Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 It is nice to see a 20 yr old gtar with the original tailpiece and PUP.
pressure Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 I have a floating pickup in my Johnny Smith. Ren looked at it and said it was the low output pickup. So if there is a low output pickup there must be a high output pickup available.
Steiner Posted August 5, 2013 Posted August 5, 2013 Happy New "H" Day H. How come I don't see a coffee mug?
H Posted August 6, 2013 Author Posted August 6, 2013 Happy New "H" Day H. How come I don't see a coffee mug? Thanks It's tea for me - coffee comes in espresso sized cups when I drink it. And I couldn't get the H cup balanced on the cushions :-/
Steiner Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 I'm a tea toddler too. Except when I drink scotch... Nice Snatch!!!
SouthpawGuy Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 New mahogany Heritage Eagle day. 1991 Antique Sunburst. Needs a little TLC but not in bad shape for 22 years of honest playing. And I'm the good books with my good lady as I traded two guitars for this So how are you liking your mahogany Eagle H ?
H Posted August 12, 2013 Author Posted August 12, 2013 So how are you liking your mahogany Eagle H ? She's slotted in to my collection nicely I can see why there's wear on the lower bass bout, it's the natural spot for the forearm to land when you throw your arm round this big beauty! I still haven't put larger gauge strings on so I prefer her sound amplified at the moment. I'm saving up for a set of the Thomastik Infelds that everyone raves about here. I've done a setup with the .011s she came with and I have the action lower than any of my other guitars - she's a really nice player! Finally, I've had no luck identifying the pickup so far.

I do remember that there was some discussion on the forum a while back about those Heritage " numbered" archtop pickups. I'm not an archtop guy, but I'd be fairly certain the hard core jazzers would have some experience with them.
Keith7940236 Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 I'm pretty sure that there were three pickups that have been used by Heritage in the Eagles. They are coincidentally numbered Heritage 1, Heritage 2 and Heritage 3. My understanding is that the last, or Heritage 3 is hotter than the other two. Jay Wolfe could tell you the whole story. The #1 has not markings on it, the #2 has a small piece of red tape on the underside and the #2 has two small pieces of red tape on the underside. I used to have a #3 on a 575 that really sounded nice.
H Posted August 22, 2013 Author Posted August 22, 2013 Still waiting for the Thomastik-Infeld strings, so no news on the pickup type yet. I'll take a look when I swap the strings. However, my new tuner buttons arrived and I put those on. I'm thinking of getting a Macassar ebony pickguard made up with dimensions sort of inbetween the Heritage one and the Benedetto style. There are some hidden thumbwheel style tone/volume knobs on the StewMac site by Schatten (http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics,_pickups/Potentiometers/Schatten_Thumbwheel_Controls.html). Does anyone have any experience fitting or using these?
2bornot2bop Posted August 23, 2013 Posted August 23, 2013 I owned a mahogany Eagle with a #3 floater. Came with an ebony fretboard. Very very warm archtop. So much in fact I sold my GE. TI's are. The greatest but I'm always after the fattest tone so it's only 13's and 14's for me. Piano wire. Well, one would expect nothing less from a piano player. Ohhhhhhhhhhhj

My Eagle came with a benedetto style pickguard/fingerrest with a Ken Armstrong P90 floater and thumbwheels. I have since put a stock fingerrest on and want to sell the old fingerrest. I am not sure if it is Ebony but one coat of dark stain will do the trick.
H Posted August 24, 2013 Author Posted August 24, 2013 That's the sort of thing I was thinking of Is your P90 mounted to the neck or the finger rest?
PrairieDude Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 That's a great looking guitar!! And it, and you, sound awesome! Great job!!
SouthpawGuy Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 Doesn't seem to have the two extra holes in the pickup cover for mounting to the body, looks like a pickguard mount ? .
randy2270 Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Doesn't seem to have the two extra holes in the pickup cover for mounting to the body, looks like a pickguard mount ? . Yes, That is correct.
randy2270 Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 why would you want to change that fingerrest, I have been rackng my brain all summer to find a stock fingerrest and a pup that wont hum. I also tried some L-7 style pickguards but eventually went back to the stock because it felt more sturdy and looked better. Feel free to check my gallerie for all the changes I made. If your motivation is to get a P90 then I would use http://www.wdmusic.com/WPU900VGD.html there are ways to mount that as a floater, but also the custom shop will install it in the top and trim out your fingerrest to fit the plastic rings.

Both Fralin and Manlius pickups make hum free P90s, the Fralin imho is better than the Manlius, fuller and fatter sounding with more output. Have the Fralins in a 137 and the Manlius in a Larrivee RS2.
H Posted August 30, 2013 Author Posted August 30, 2013 why would you want to change that fingerrest...Firstly, I'd like something in ebony to provide a little more contrast with the guitar body. Secondly, I'd like to get the volume pot out of the way and plan to try Schatten thumbwheel controls. I don't want to mess up the original pickguard trying to do either of these things, so I'll probably just source a nice piece of ebony and make my own. I'm going to use the existing pickup but the Schatten thumbwheel controls will give me the option of a tone control too.
