SouthpawGuy Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Found this photo in the gallery, taken at PSP V 2012 by schundog. http://www.heritageownersclub.com/forums/gallery/image/4208-12-psp-v-226/ What exactly is it ? At first it looks like a jig for producing a lefty guitar, but I doubt it. I'm guessing a right handed guitar sits in it face down ( hence the foam material around the rim, to prevent scratches ?). Looks like a fairly deep fixture, maybe three to four inches deep. Presuming the front of the guitar is face down in the jig what possible work would be required to be done on the back of the guitar ? Unless of course it actually is a jig for working on lefty guitars and the front of the guitar is face up, is the jig used for drilling bridge / tailpiece holes in the top of the guitar. Hard to tell from the photo if it's for a single cut or double cut model, maybe it's a for lefty 575s ? Curious minds would like to know, plus it's Saturday morning and the second cup of coffee hasn't kicked in yet. .
bolero Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 looks like a form for the big hollowbodies...maybe to hold the sides & back in place while they install purfling & glue it all together?

schundog Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Well, if you don't know, I'm not telling! Just kidding. I really have no idea.
SouthpawGuy Posted August 10, 2013 Author Posted August 10, 2013 Well, if you don't know, I'm not telling! Just kidding. I really have no idea. So you spent how many hours in the factory, last week, last year, and the year before, and you're not an expert on how Heritage makes their guitars ?
Guest HRB853370 Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 So you spent how many hours in the factory, last week, last year, and the year before, and you're not an expert on how Heritage makes their guitars ? He is too busy shooting photos to pay any attention to anything else......however I think it is a good excuse for you to head West to Kalamazoo and find out for yourself!
SouthpawGuy Posted August 10, 2013 Author Posted August 10, 2013 Do the guys, and gal, at Heritage explain the processes during the factory tour ? Silly question I know.
Guest HRB853370 Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Do the guys, and gal, at Heritage explain the processes during the factory tour ? Silly question I know. Yes, they take time to do that. They are so proud of their craftsmanship. Arnie expecially and Katie too! Since I had seen it a few times before I didn't crowd around because I wanted the first timers to experience the actual watching of it!
SouthpawGuy Posted August 11, 2013 Author Posted August 11, 2013 Good to know, must check out some older PSP vids maybe there's some building content in there.
bolero Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 you know what...there is a lot of sawdust in there...that would suggest some sanding so maybe they do some carving of the top/back while it's in that jig? and there is a cutout for the neck/heel...hmm Katie posts here occasionally, maybe she could shed some light on it?

Good point, the cutout for the neck would suggest the neck is already attached, i.e. the guitar body is already glued and assembled.
yoslate Posted August 13, 2013 Posted August 13, 2013 Just another guess here, Paul, but that looks like a slack sanding belt (with a directional arrow on it), next to the jig, in the lower left corner of the photo. And the bottom of the form seems to have some pretty fine dust in it. My guess would be that it's a jig to hold hollows or semis for a close-to-final slack-belt sanding of carved tops or backs.

Very interesting, yes I can see that now, the back of the sandpaper with the arrow. So it must be a sanding / carving jig then.
DetroitBlues Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 That shape looks very close to a super jumbo acoustic body to me...
SouthpawGuy Posted August 14, 2013 Author Posted August 14, 2013 That shape looks very close to a super jumbo acoustic body to me... Like a 575 perhaps.
schundog Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 NEWS FLASH!! I was just watching TalismanRIch's video from PSP V, and at, I shit you not, the 3:39 mark in the first long video of the factory tour, the fretboard guy has a hollowbody body in this form and is slack sanding the back of the body. Mystery solved.... Get the video if you can from Rich. Thanks a lot for the DVD, Rich, it's bringing back a lot of great memories.

Must have been speed reading earlier, didn't notice that part.
schundog Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 Yes, TalismanRich was kind enough to burn a bunch of DVDs of last years events that he had taken video of, and handed them out this year. I don't know if he has any of it uploaded to Youtube or not, you might want to PM him. With this mystery piece, the form has the guitar, face down, in it, and it is sitting on a table on wheels or rails and it is run back and forth at a 90 degree angle to the sanding belt. It goes back and forth so smoothly, it almost has to be on a rail of some sort.

schundog Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 I found a picture I took of the actual sander and the table that goes under it at the 90 degree angle. You can see the box on the other side of the sander belt.
