twizzly Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 I've been looking into a 575 and a 535 -- I appreciate they're different animals, but at this stage, I need a bargain. Anyway, is there some way to ensure I'll get a slim neck profile? Are certain years/models more likely to have a slim neck profile? I'm ideally looking for something with a Gibson "60s slim taper" style -- but there is so little information out there on neck profile. Thanks!
DetroitBlues Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Just about 90% of all Heritages have a slim neck profile... Much to my dismay...
tbonesullivan Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 You should have tried out my H150 at the last psp. It's got a nice beefy neck, much bigger than my 535s. Also it weighs 11lbs, so it doubles as a boat anchor. If you want a nice chunky neck semi-hollow, you may also want to consider a hamer newport.
SouthpawGuy Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Generally my earlier Heritages have a slim neck, from the '86 170 to the '96 535. The rest aren't really slim or chunky, but somewhere in between. No two are actually the same, the 2001 Prospect has the slimmest neck of all, but I suspect it was custom ordered that way by the previous lady owner. A very rough guide would be that necks are bigger in general since the mid to late '00s.
FredZepp Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 My 2000 H-150 is a medium 50's neck, my 1992 H-150 is a thin neck ( which I love ) , but my 1989 H-140 is a chunky neck and the 1988 H-150 is the thickest of the bunch and quite chunky. So don't assume that a certain year has a particular type of neck.
HANGAR18 Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 a 575 and a 535 are completely different animals and I think any 535 would be easier to play than any 575 (IMHO)
Kuz Posted August 14, 2013 Posted August 14, 2013 Just about 90% of all Heritages have a slim neck profile... Much to my dismay... Where in heaven name did you get that..... Early years were slim, later year are definiely more chunky close to '50s style necks.
TalismanRich Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Just about 90% of all Heritages have a slim neck profile... Much to my dismay... What DB calls "slim" I call perfect. It all a matter of taste. As for thickness by year, I don't know if there is any trend. My guitars have a spread from 87 to 2003, and they are all slightly different. I can adapt to any of them within a couple of minutes.
bolero Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 the '90's H150's I've seen have fairly slim necks, like what is attributed to a '60 LP in the 2,000's they started fattening up a bit, I think? to where the current ones are. I had a 2005 H150 with a more substantial neck...actually it was about perfect I think popular demand since about 2000's has been towards thicker necks. maybe because of the Historic line of Gibson's with the '58 & '59 profiles? before all of this historic nonsense, everybody wanted a "fast" neck...whatever that is supposed to mean....very thin?

Shame, shame... a 575 and a 535 are completely different animals and I think any 535 would be easier to play than any 575 (IMHO) I sold my 535 because it didn't fit. Still have two 575s; Love 'em.
