VJ's 357 made it to Jay Wolfe Guitars

Would someone please explain to me why the pickup selector switch utilizes a front route and plastic cover instead of a rear route and no plastic cover on the front of the guitar?

When I was talking to Marv about my H-357, I asked him if he would put the pickup selector switch down by the tone and volume pots in order to eliminate the pickguard.

He said, “Well Bill…. I could do that if you can tell me how to get the pickup wires to the pot cavity.”

I said, “Your right. Sorry I’m a dumbass. I did not think of that.”

Then he said, “That OK, but what I can do is make a wood pickguard that would match the wood and finish of the guitar body. I just did that on Dave’s orange H-357, and it came out pretty good.”

I said “Cool let’s do that.”

So the pickguard is to cover the routing for both the pickup selector switch and pickup wires.

1. Before lower wing is glued onto the center assembly, drill one 1/4" hole diagonally at an appropriate angle through the gluing edge of the center assembly and into each of the two routed pickup cavities.

2. Clamp the lower wing (before it is glued onto the center assembly) and route a 1/4" wide, 1/2" deep channel into the gluing edge of the lower wing so that one end of the channel will eventually match up with the hole drilled into the neck pickup cavity while the other end of the route will enter the routed pot cavity.

3. Glue three strips of 1/4" x 1/4" wood into the 1/4" x 1/2" channel routed into and flush with the gluing edge of the lower wing, allowing one 1/4" or larger gap where each pickup cavity drill hole will join up with the routed cavity in order to form a 1/4" x 1/4" conduit for the pickup wires to reach the pot cavity.

4. Glue lower wing onto the center assembly and complete construction of guitar as normal.

or you could do it from the back of the gtr, routing down to the top, same as a 150

the "pickguard" would be on the back of the gtr though

So at that point it would be a pickguard- less guitar with a pickguard on the back.
