Learning An Old Lesson All Over Again

This past Saturday night my brother and I played a rooftop party in Charlotte. I had to travel a very long way to get there and I had limited trunk space so I packed a Roland VGA-5 (http://www.rolandus.com/products/details/243). 65 watts with modeling and so on and so forth so I wouldn't need any pedals.

We had three short sets interspersed with other bands so I put the VGA-5 up front and sat/stood behind it as appropriate. The VGA-5 has a sealed back. So you'd think I could sit BEHIND it with my Eagle Classic and not have feedback, right?

WRONG.

As the rooftop filled up we had to keep cranking the volume. Once the Roland got to about 8/10 I had to keep my hands on the strings to keep it from moaning. And remember, I'm behind the thing. I thought about all the old "stuff socks in it" advice I'd heard about playing a hollowbody on stage. I have to confess that I'd never tried it in a place this loud. I've done plenty of church gigs with the Eagle but this whole cranked-up party thing was too much.

For the third set I put the Eagle on the stand and left it there. Played my Ocean Doublecut. I've learned my lesson, which is the same one everybody else learned in 1940, right?

The whole socks in the hollowbody thing reminds me of a guy I used to work with about 20 years ago. He had a cheap-o hollowbody (I believe it was an Oscar Schmidt) that would feedback horribly. His "solution" was to use some of that spray insulation foam from the hardware store, that comes in an aerosol can. He claimed it worked, but made the guitar look like hell. Guess being a cheap guitar, he didn't really care.

haha. Yeah... but I have to relearn that lesson twice a year. haha.

Rock styled music?

At the end of the night yeah, but I was even fighting feedback on this:

is that rainfall I hear? or a fountain? adds a cool ambiance

Taming the wild beast is a task but well worth it. If you're not looking for it, it is a pain. It appears you had a good time. Congrats!

Yeah, it was raining and the wind was heavy-duty. Apparently this happens a fair amount in Charlotte. On the positive side, it was nice to have a breeze under the lights!
