plectrum Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 I find myself in a real dilemma. I know that the H535 is one of the most universal guitars. However I like the idea of having good chord tones and sustain and good durability. I Certainly can't buy both, however with the right pickups and electronics how good is the clean tone in the H150?. Weight is not an issue for me since I am a former bass player. So can you owners of the H150cm chime in, can this axe be versatile as well?
tulk1 Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Dude, that's a lot of question with relative answers. Once man's clean might be another man's dirty. Then factor in the amp, settings, venue, etc. But if I'm following your intent, you want to know if an H150 can be as versatile as an H535. Yes! In all respectst except one - it won't sound like a semi-hollow. Which has it's own "woody" tone, for sure. But as a versatile guitar, the venerable LP design has been used by folks playing everything from jazz to bebop to rock to country to reggae to metal to to to ... if you follow that. In the right hands it can handle whatever is thrown at it. Except for maybe that Strat clean, which is a totally different beast. I'm using clean in reference to clarity , btw. So. Thats my take.
Kuz Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 I LOVE my 150s ( one with humbuckers and the other with p90s) but I agree with what Larry Carlton said "the 335 (or 535) is the most versatile guitar and that's why I started and stayed with it" The 535 can do classic rock, blues, jazz, even a little country. With a Strat & a 535 you cover all genres. But with that said Les Paul played jazz with his LP and Alex Scholnick is playing jazz with a 150 & 575. It really is personal preference- What kind of music do you play??
shook494 Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 I play everything from clean to blues tones to full on metal with my 150 and I love it. It works for me.
brentrocks Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 my 150 is a great guitar as well...i dont think you could go wrong with one. i think your pickup selection will have a lot to do with how well you like it. My Gary Moore originally came w/ EMGs...i didnt like the sound of them so i swapped them out for a set of SD Alnico II pros and the guitar came to life!!! If I'd seen you throwin' it around like that at your farm .... well, I'd have to have taken action. As fast and as quick as I could have!!!! >

Kuz Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 I think he is smokin' grass when he throws those beautiful guitars on the grass! I'm with Kenny. I can't stand bullies that pray on defenseless women, children, animals, or guitars. Ken & I might have to take him behind the barn show Brent what it feels like to get thrown down on the grass....
Mikenov Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Damn Chico, you beat me to it... ;D p.s. we need some grass smoking smileys.. closest I could find was the While i was browsing I did notice Smurfet, Papa Smurf and a third smurf to be named later. Thats pretty cool... or should I say Smurfy? I have been voted off the island for smurf references haven't I ...
High Flying Bird Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 I think he is smokin' grass when he throws those beautiful guitars on the grass! Weren't you guys smoking some of Brent's dad's "kind bud?" What did you think he was growing in that little glass building where Randy did the interviews? Why did you think Randy was interviewing people there? Duh? I broke some of that stuff out in the Detroit airport and several flights were delayed. It was like Itchycoo Park.
jacques Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Now there goes poor young plectrum's question right up in smoke! What do you guys think of the impression this makes on a new member! I think this whole place is loaded with (former) HEADS :afro: To get back to your subject: it depends on your amp too! After I switched from Fender Dual Showman (sort of a 'king of clean') to a Carvin Legacy combo I noticed the 535 wasn't as nice as the 150 like it was before. Now I keep playing my 150 because it is so enormously versatile. You do need an amp that reacts to the amount of 'pressure' you put on the strings. In my case a light touch is like velvet in all kinds of jazzy settings and with a twist of my fingers alone (and a button pressed with my foot) I'm rocking with great bluesy tone. So try and learn more about what your amp does. (and after you bought the 150 you wil want a 535 anyway)

I was really thinking about just nabbing the guitar and running home with it. But okay, we may need to teach him a lesson if he's going to abuse that guitar. :police: I'll be right behind you, John. As soon as I finish what I'm doing here. .............. okay, now I'm hungry, dude! ................ Uh, what were we doing?
brentrocks Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 you guys crack me up...i needed a good laugh today!!!  ;D ;D :) :P

I didn't know it was "Kalamazoo Blue Bud". Maybe that explains my paranoid thoughts about my guitar playing- contact paranoia!!!
