greatmutah Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 New to the board and just got my first one. Davesultra was cool to meet up with me for the sale and I picked up that beautiful white 157 he had. Dave is a super cool guy to work with and gets my recommendation as a seller. So on to the guitar. This is my first Heritage and having heard good things over the years. I've owned several Gibsons over the years and played a few outside of those as well. Never played one of these though so I was taking a chance. Well I'm glad I did. The quality of this instrument is superb. The construction and finish of this guitar is easily as good if not better than anything Gibson puts out. I really can't see any construction flaws on this guitar. There's some finish checking on the headstock but that was from delivery to and from NAMM (shipper mishandled it and its on the back. You have to look to see it). Action and fretwork is fantastic. The inlays are jaw dropping beautiful too. This is not a weight relieved guitar in anyway and that's quite alright by me. Neck is pretty fat to what I'm used to. It's thicker than the neck on my LP Studio. It honestly reminds me of the neck on my cousins R7. It feels fantastic and plays wonderfully. Overall I'm very pleased with this guitar. It's my first Heritage and definitely won't be my last.

First, congrats! Second, welcome to the board. Third ^^^ you got that right! Heritage guitars are addictive. Fourth, yeah, what that Southpawguy said. You need to post your own pics of that bad boy!
greatmutah Posted August 25, 2013 Author Posted August 25, 2013 Excuse the iPhone pics. I'll get some better ones up today. I pulled the pickups. Guitar originally came with Seths but had been replaced with Duncan 59s. I don't think Dave even knew about that. No complaints here. I got this guitar for a great price. I dropped in a set of Gibson Classic 57s and I'm in heaven now.
PunkKitty Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Very nice! Again, welcome to the forum. There are a lot of good people here.
SouthpawGuy Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Excellent 157, don't see too many white ones.
Keith7940236 Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Congratulations, very nice guitar. Welcome to the forum.
greatmutah Posted August 25, 2013 Author Posted August 25, 2013 Gonna be awhile before my next one hahaha. I need to recoup some expenses after this one. I just happened to be in a good position to get one at this time financially and well this popped up at the right time. But to answer the question, I don't know. I may get a H140 or 150 (the Standard to my Custom I guess?) eventually. In the gallery I saw shots of a 147 that was done in a translucent blue finish that was absolutely stunning. I'd like something along that line. Always wanted a Les Paul style guitar in blue. I'm also considering a 535 or a Millenium single cut for down the road as I don't have a semi hollow body guitar.
greatmutah Posted August 25, 2013 Author Posted August 25, 2013 you did good on that one Thanks dude. I don't feel so bad about missing out on the quilted 140 you had up now
schundog Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Congratulations, man, and welcome to the HOC. That's a sweet looking Heritage; Enjoy it! +1 on Dave being easy to deal with. He gave me a great deal on a like-new 20 year old Peavey Bandit at PSP.
HANGAR18 Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 Excellent 157, don't see too many white ones. Agreed! Beautiful!

Welcome to the HOC! You did very well on your first Heritage and I like your logic on acquiring your next one. I must warn you though that you'll probably have them all before you're done. Everyone here will be happy to cheer (we're great enablers) you on each step of the way!
greatmutah Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 So about that pickup change I did... Apparently, I "Peter Green'd" this guitar for a little bit. Let me explain. The set of 57s I have came from an old friend who installed them in an Epiphone for me. The original braided wire was cut short. Like super short. Like whoever had these before my friend just unmounted them from the body and cut the wire right there without unsoldering from the actual guitar. I knew this. I've had this set for 10 years. I pulled them out of my Epi due to putting EMGs in there and well, I never did anything with them. Figured I'd keep them around for the right guitar. The way they were wired is two leads were attached and solder up to the original braid and hot. On the bridge pickup I could readily see where the solder job was done and white was hot and black was ground. I assumed the neck was the same as it was taped up pretty heavily around the soldered area. Didn't wanna mess with it. Apparently I was wrong as I finally flipped on both pickups and got that near cocked wah pedal sound reminiscent of Peter Green's favorite in between sounds. I recognized it immediately: I had a 2006 LP Standard that someone had done a full Peter Green mod too (He kept the bridge pickup, but the magnet in the neck pickup - It was a Duncan Antiquity - had been flipped). I had a 4 conductor 498T in there and just flipped the leads on the bridge pickup and problem solved. Did the same thing here. Also removed my pickup cover from the hot circuit as well. Moral of the story? Triple check your wiring for one. Or don't. And you'll sound like Peter Green.
Guest HRB853370 Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Sounding like Peter Green is not necessarily a bad thing!
greatmutah Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 If I could play half as well as Peter Green doing that style of music I'd be all about it!
barrymclark Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Love it. Very classy looking guitar. White tux!
greatmutah Posted August 26, 2013 Author Posted August 26, 2013 Thanks for all the kind words. It's stunning for sure. I enjoy looking at it almost as much as I do playing it.
SouthpawGuy Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 So have you decided which is next, a 535 or a Millie ?
TalismanRich Posted August 26, 2013 Posted August 26, 2013 Great looking 157. When you get around to the next one, both the Mille and the 535 are great. The 535 is my "go to" guitar for just about everything. You can't go wrong with one! Welcome to the HOC.
