totonka Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 I did a horse trade and ended up with a nice 1988 vintage white H-162. Finally found some time today to play around with it through my amp. Buzz, snap, crackle! Aw crap! I've never replaced an input jack before - so I guess I should figure it out eh? I go to Guitar Center to get the part. Its the store I love to hate. After some unnecessary discussion with the guitar tech, apparently to prove I'm not drooling on myself, I leave with the part to commence the operation. Removed the two wires and then removed the old input jack. Installed the new input jack and soldered the connections. Works great! I also notice that the middle pick-up is sitting very low in the body of the guitar.......don't know if you can see it in the photo: Messing with the screws does not raise nor lower the pickup. So I loosen the strings and lift the pickup and there are these two springs stuck via magnetization to the underneath of the pickup on both ends. I put the screws through the springs and reinstall the pickup. Sounds much better! Those of you in the know - please let me know if I did it wrong. Also, I need to find where I can get some control cavity cover screws. I'm missing a couple and it is making my OCD act up.
Steiner Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Find a good hobby shop (model RC place). They have all the micro fasteners.
DavesNotHere Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Boy oh boy that sure looks familiar! I know exactly where the missing screws are. They are under the tree near the barn at Brent's parents farm. I had this open at PSP V last year and had Marv, Ren , et al sign it but I lost a couple of the back plate screws. Matt (Grubber) bought this from me a few months ago. I'm glad it's still in the family!
totonka Posted September 1, 2013 Author Posted September 1, 2013 You did well. Cool guitar. Find a good hobby shop (model RC place). They have all the micro fasteners. Tanks! Oh, Steiner, I referred someone over to you for cables today. Hopefully you get some monay!
SouthpawGuy Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Cool stuff, nice 162 ! Re the middle pickup being lower, it might have been set that low deliberately. By setting the middle pickup low, and with a lower output middle pickup, it increases the "quack" in the 2 and 4 positions on the 5 way switch. I tend to use the 2 and 4 tones quite a bit and have the middle p'up lowered on a few guitars.
brentrocks Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 SWEET!!! those Kahler Spyder trems are getting pretty hard to find....parts are getting more rare all the time
HANGAR18 Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Removed the two wires and then removed the old input jack. Installed the new input jack and soldered the connections. Works great! What did you do with that big long arm looking thing which came with the new jack? Cut it off? Leave it in there? Bend it out of the way? I'm planning to install one of those when I am able to get back to my work bench in a couple of weeks.

The new jack had three prongs, while the old one had only two. Once I soldered the wires on the prong I snipped, I plugged the cord in and touched the other prongs with the other wire to see which one gave me a response and soldered the wire there.
Trouble Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Man I hate those jacks. Seems like their service life is about a month. I converted my 150p to a regular jack with a LP jackplate. I love Heritage guitars, but it sees like they took a step backwards using those. Thank god they've gotten away from them now.
H Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Switchcraft is my choice for jacks and toggle switches.
FredZepp Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 I've got one of those that I need to install, but haven't got to it yet. I bought the stereo version because the extra piece inside may make it more stable/ durable..

The Grand Wizard at Guitar Center asked me if I wanted a mono or stereo - I figured it was a trick question.
HANGAR18 Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Switchcraft is my choice for jacks and toggle switches. Good! I'll look for online vendors that carry that brand. Anything not made in China! Amen Brother!! The Grand Wizard at Guitar Center asked me if I wanted a mono or stereo - I figured it was a trick question. The complete rewire job I'm preparing to do requires a stereo jack. Those darn active pickups!

HANGAR18 Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 http://www.switchcraft.com/productsummary.aspx?Parent=884 I was looking at that page and I am currently trying to decide which one is going to be the long barrel gold stereo jack without that big cable clamp arm. I need one of those to go on my H157.
