bolero Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 this is a cool little amp: it's a small & compact 1x12, has 4 inputs which you can daisy chain like a marshall, has a great clean sound, and gets nasty when you crank it. plus there is footswitchable tremolo most evidence points to this being the famed Jimmy Page supro model, as it was the only 1x12 they made when he bought it. Page searched one out because he was impressed with a supro his friend Albert Lee had I still have the original speaker; it has a single small hole in the front from whatever poked those holes thru the grillcloth, and the surround has lifted a bit so it needs to be reglued. that Fane that's in there is a very good sounding speaker though, and probably more robust
Steiner Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Looks like the old gal has been around the block a few times. I bet she Still puts a smile on your face; eh?
Trouble Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Great amp! Not much room in that chassis! That's what I was thinking, a lot going on in there! That looks like a fun amp, how many watts?
slider313 Posted September 2, 2013 Posted September 2, 2013 Cool amp! I'm sure the Fane is much more efficient than the original Jensen and gives the amp a nice boost in volume. Nice to see the original RCA 6973's in there. They have become quite expensive these days. The EH version is a pretty good tube. They are in a shorter bottle and look different. Valco amps are point to point, using terminal strips which are riveted to the chassis. Real tough to work on without burning something with the soldering iron! Some techs refer to them as "rats nests" because of the layout.
bolero Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 ok here's a couple clips of the amp...guitar has duncan 59's which are way hotter than a tele pickup.....so it's very fuzzy compared to what Mr Page would have been using. although I think he had a rangemaster or such https://soundcloud.com/roofleaks/supro1 https://soundcloud.com/roofleaks/supro2
FredZepp Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Nice tone ! I could hear some ZZ Tops first album tones there and the Zep was quite fun. A sweet tone for recording. Well done post on that amp... Pics, clips and all.
fxdx99 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Cool amp, Chris. Nice clips, too - can hear why that's a choice amp for recording.
Gitfiddler Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 What a cool old Supro! Is that an old Westinghouse rectifier squeezed over in the corner?
slider313 Posted September 3, 2013 Posted September 3, 2013 Nice tone! These amps are about 10-12 watts of pure crunch. The hotter the pickup, the more drive and sustain. Try a nice P90 guitar in one of these and you'll be amazed. I know a few players who have spent more on one pedal, trying to capture that sound!
bolero Posted September 3, 2013 Author Posted September 3, 2013 thx guys...!! yep old westinghouse tube there haven't checked the preamp tubes yet....those caps are weird, i guess they pull straight off? they don't twist off like most of them do, it was taking a bit of force so I left them on ( you can see one partially pulled off in that pic but I didn't want to break anything ) I will do a proper recording with a close mic, that was just a mic in the room
