HANGAR18 Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 After reading a recent thread on amp stands and which one has the better tone and do they make a difference, I got a real kick out of seeing this guy named Mike Melchoine who has a Grammy sitting on his mantle at home who performs locally with the Lost Highway Band, using an ordinary chair that happened to be near by as an amp stand. I am a complete corksniffer who is always getting wound up about tiny little things regarding looks, performance and tone, and seeing a Grammy winner playing the most ragged out guitar I have ever seen on a stage and using a common chair as an amp stand is a real reality check for me. Yep, I got a good chuckle out of seeing these things. I also took a picture of the plastic household fan they had blowing air into their PA amp rack. So the moral I received from all of this is, playing the instruments/equipment is more important that the instruments themselves. BTW, the band sounded incredible as always. I should get a video of this Mike fella next time. Wow is he good!
HANGAR18 Posted September 12, 2013 Author Posted September 12, 2013 I think that video was his first show after he was recovering from a stroke. He's in a Cajun band called Buckwheat Zydeco. (I think.) http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/31/AR2010033101536.html
Genericmusic Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 I've seen him play many a times. He's a picker that's fore sure.
DetroitBlues Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Not sure about the best, but seems the most economically and readily available at most clubs...
yoslate Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 ...and cheap, too! In fact, most venues provide them.
tulk1 Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 Interesting that he has blade pickups in his Tele. Love a good picker!!
Gitfiddler Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 That type of chair is the best amp stand with all the right features: Padded seat bottom to firmly cushion amp? check! Steel tube frame for strong support? check! Tilted back for optimum sound projection, and to prevent the drummer from placing his beer bottle on it? check! And finally...one nasty looking Tele in the hands of a master player? check!
smurph1 Posted September 12, 2013 Posted September 12, 2013 ...and cheap, too! In fact, most venues provide them. LOL.. I get the feeling he "relic-ed" that Tele himself..
