heritagefan7 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Minus the pk & the headstock...can you (anyone) see a LP in a picture and know it's not a 150---or can you do it in reverse? (say for instance on ebay) Same criteria w/ the pk & headstock--Can you see a difference in person?
greatmutah Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 The lower horn is the most pronounced difference. LPs rise a bit higher than the 150. Also to my eyes the upper horn is more rounded off on a LP. Subtle difference but enough.
Yooper Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 Bridge and tailpiece would be obvious on older 150's. Treble Horn shape on the newer. Probably easier to see the difference than to hear the difference, as evidenced by the Pat and Doug's blindfold test.
tulk1 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 I was just watching a vid posted on TGP. And right there in the midst of all the calamity was GM playing a Heritage. You can only see it briefly, but there was no mistaking it for an LP. Later you get a quick view of the headstock, which is the dead giveaway.
Spectrum13 Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 If you compare size on the website the LP is 12-1/2" wide and 17" VS a 150 at 13" and 17 1/4 long. The LP is sized like a fat 140.
SouthpawGuy Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 I thought the difference was obvious until I looked at some of my own photos ... .
SouthpawGuy Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 And for those who can't guess which is which .
big bob Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 The horn is a dead giveaway. I have a heritage with the Gibby horn and it most certainly a different shape. http://www.heritageownersclub.com/forums/gallery/image/1968-92-h150-custom/
TalismanRich Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 I thought the difference was obvious until I looked at some of my own photos ... . I could tell right away... the wood on the Heritage was better, and it was paired with a proper "tweed" amp!
SouthpawGuy Posted September 13, 2013 Posted September 13, 2013 I could tell right away... the wood on the Heritage was better, and it was paired with a proper "tweed" amp! Ha ! Actually that is the only time I've ever seen flame on that LP .. in photos. These days it would be known as a plain top, but it was just a plain old LP Std when I bought it in '91. Same guitar different angle ... And the 150 from the same angle ... The cutaway has more of a point on the LP .
heritagefan7 Posted September 15, 2013 Author Posted September 15, 2013 Southpaw--thx for the great comparison---I had to look several times-man---they look close to my untrained eye. Playing/sound/quality of the build are all another story, but in pics---they can seem really similar--again, on my monitor to my novice eye!

FredZepp Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Here's a Heritage... from 1988 (with a few changes made.. )
Gitfiddler Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Unless we want to dive into the abyss of Les Paul historical accuracy, as our friends do over at the LP Forum, there really isn't too much difference between Gibson LP's and Heritage 150's. Also, there are so many varieties and sub-varieties of Gibson LP models produced, that if one were to toss a 150 into the collective, it wouldn't get a second look...if it weren't for the obvious headstock n horn difference. Sure, if one were to put them on an examination table and perform a detailed analysis with calipers and micrometers, the differences would increase significantly. The similarity and differences were likely the topic of discussions between Heritage's and Gibson's lawyers back in the early 80's....

Great perspective fiddler,,,surely it was a much lengthier discussion b/w the attorneys than any on the HOC. But, in truth our discussions may prove more interesting!
big bob Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 I say you are wrong there fellas. I have a Gibby cut heritage 150 and a heritage cut 170 and the horn shape is def different. I like them both, they are each wonderful in their own right but they are def different. There is also a difference in the depth of the dish rout, the Gibbs tend to have deeper dishes.
