ZeeBee Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 With the lack of 555's available on the current market, I'm thinking about a H-550 with SD59s. I've never played one nor heard one. Can anyone give me some info on the tone, playability and type of music this guitar will do with ease. Can it get that Larry Carlton or Lee Ritenour tone with some adjustments? And can it take a light dirt form a pedal (e.g, Exotc AC and/or Zendrive)?
GuitArtMan Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 The H-535 would be much closer to a H-555 than a H-550. The only difference between the 555 and 535 is maple (555) vs. mahogany (535) neck and ebony (555) vs. rosewood (535) fingerboard. All the other changes are merely cosmetic. The H-555 on the other hand is a full hollow body whereas the 555 and 535 are both semi-hollow bodies. Also the H-550 has a 25 1/2" scale length where the 555 and 535 both have a 24 3/4" scale length.
GuitArtMan Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 Doh! The above post should have read: "The H-550 on the other hand is a full hollow body whereas..." and not "The H-555 on the other hand is a full hollow body whereas..."
Gitfiddler Posted November 2, 2007 Posted November 2, 2007 Also, the 2007 H555's all come with one piece Mahogany necks like the H535's...unless you special order the previous spec, multi-lam Maple necks. For the tones you describe, you might want to wait for a used H535 or H555 to come up on Ebay or Gbase.
Heritage525 Posted November 3, 2007 Posted November 3, 2007 I love my 550, I changed the pups to Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates and turned it into a tone machine. The PG pups have a bit more treble than the '59, which really helped the rock type tone on a complete hollow body guitar.
