Thundersteel Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 I was recently looking at Wolfe's gbase inventory page, and saw some of the new plain top H150s--not bad for $1799. But at the bottom of the description, it says "NOTE: case is additional- Heritage logo case = $100 w/ guitar. Other brand hardshells from $89 & premium gig bags from $39." When did cases become optional?
tulk1 Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 Eric, as far as I know, the case has always been optional. It's just that most dealers either included it in the price or just didn't mention it. When I spec'd my two customs I had to specify a case. Odd that Wolfe has started stating its an option, tho'. Thought his guitars always included the case in the price. Different economy, maybe?
111518 Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 I suspect this is just an effort to get the "first glance" price to seem as low as possible. If you are hooked by the $1799, Mad-Ave think goes, you are unlikely to spit the hook for a bill. A new Heritage for 17!!! (fine print to follow). Just me, but I'd much prefer if they'd just list the guitar at $1900, including case. I love playing, don't enjoy feeling played. Seems to be the world we live in, however, and Jay has to compete.
Vanschoyck Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 I recall a dealer in Vegas a while back that sold Heritage with a different case brand saying that they were better cases. Don't remember if he charged extra or not. Does anyone actually ship guitars with no case? I've seen places that just won't do that and say so. If you want to sell guitars over the net I'm thinking it could get complicated.
High Flying Bird Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 My 357 was shipped in a gig bag. I was nervous as could be until I got it - in perfect order.
Vanschoyck Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 The shippers must be getting hip to the whole guitar thing. Wish the airlines would. Who am I kidding, I'm scared to fly.
JackBaruth Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 I didn't get a case with either one of my 357s.
tulk1 Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 I think the 357s are a different uh ... case! altogether. Non-standard body size, etc. And I remember Ron posting that Marv said they didn't have cases for them. Wonder how many guitars actually leave the plant without a case? Other than the one-offs like the 357s. So far as cases being extra, not sure that's a recent trend. I had to buy the case separate for my '74 LPC. First new guitar I'd ever purchased, so just went with it. And MARS used to do that all the time, even when the specs said they shipped with bags or cases. GC used to be very guilty of that. Our local one no longer practices the pulling of cases and making them extra. Or so I'm told.
Kuz Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 Marketing gimmick to make the price look lower than what it really is. The exception being the 357, REALLY how many people buy a guitar WITHOUT a case???!!!! Very, very, very few would by a guitar without a case. Man, I would be scared to death to accept shipping of a guitar WITHOUT A CASE. Personally, I hate to be nickeled & Dimed.... just give it to me straight. What is the final cost, period.

If you want to sell guitars over the net I'm thinking it could get complicated. It was Ed Roman who did that. The cases are SKB very nice but I would have liked the option of getting a Heritage case with my Heritage guitar. At least Wolfe is giving people choices in cases if they want to save a few bucks for a non-Heritage case.
davesultra Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 Wolfe used to ship many of their LP shaped Heritage guitars in those Axcess cases. My '06 came in one of those. Nice stout case, but I miss not having the logo.
Billgelder Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 I had a chat with Jay about the whole case scenario. Being a road musician, I would not buy a guitar without a case, but a large percentage of Wolfe guitar patrons are collectors. They will hang the new purchase on the wall and do not need another case that will not be used. He has prices the plain top H-150s and plain top H-535s as low as he can in order to help musician get a high quality guitar at reasonable cost. I think $100 for Heritage hard shell case is a good deal.
skydog52 Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 I understand what Jay is trying to do but I'm with Kuz on a case. If you are going to spend that kind of money for a guitar, a case is essential and expected. IMHO

Guest HRB853370 Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 I was shopping for a car the other day, and the price looked really good. Until the salesman told me the engine would cost me $3000 more and if I wanted wheels and tires, it would be another $500. I was like, WTF! I always thought the price should include an engine as well as wheels and tires.
Billgelder Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 Hang the new purchase on the wall? Now who would do that, really! On my way to PSP this year I was fortunate enough to stop a three HOC members homes. All three had guitars hanging on their walls.

Ed Roman used to brag about the price of the regular TKL case he would provide vs. the Heritage logo case. It was a few bucks less but not worth not having the logo in my opinion.

If not, subtract the price for the case. Just a MAJOR pet peeve of mine, just like when they (and other dealers do too) give the retail price and then state, "but our price for you is...." SERIOUSLY, I am not paying retail ANYWHERE so give me your price and I will make up my mind. I have been in sales for 23 years. Don't nickel & dime me, and don't BS me about how great your price is under retail.
bolero Posted October 11, 2013 Posted October 11, 2013 I believe TKL makes the Heritage hardshell cases....as well as the Gibson's

brentrocks Posted October 12, 2013 Posted October 12, 2013 did you guys with the 357s find that a Gibson firebird case worked?
