MartyGrass Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 I was visiting Pete Moreno's shop very recently. There are several HOC members' guitars there for finish work. As we were talking he mentioned converting one to a purple top. He has done this a few times over the years but not often. So asked if he mixes his dyes for each guitar or does he have a stock purple color. He told me the first time he did a purple he prepped the top to bare wood, as usual. He then went to a store and bought purple RIT. For those of you who don't know what RIT is, here's a link. It's worth knowning. http://www.ritdye.com/content/century-rit He mixed up a bowl of the dye, rubbed it into the top, then wiped it off. After it was dry, he added the clear nitro coats. When the lady picked up her purple guitar, she was ecstatic. That's Pete's secret purple recipe.
Genericmusic Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Pete works in mysterious ways. I was once told by none other than Kenny Rambo that he walks on water...but only when it (the water) is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
skydog52 Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 Interesting. Fabric dye. The secret ingredient. I've thought about a purple one for awhile. Someday!
DavesNotHere Posted October 26, 2013 Posted October 26, 2013 I picked up a really cheap Squire a while back and I was thinking about staining the neck a wild color. I looked at RIT but wasn't sure it would work. I guess it does.
brentrocks Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 I saw the guitar to be finished the other day....beautiful top on it....should make a great purple!!!
Vanschoyck Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 That just shows you once again that it's important, after all, to know the difference between Rit and Shinola!

chico Posted October 27, 2013 Posted October 27, 2013 Hadn't heard the product name RIT since I was a kid, my mom used it for it's intended (dye fabrics) purposes... I remember the boxes..
MartyGrass Posted October 28, 2013 Author Posted October 28, 2013 Here's a purple one on eBay. It could be RIT!
Gitfiddler Posted October 28, 2013 Posted October 28, 2013 That is too close to Pink...or is that salmon?? I'm a tad color blind, so don't listen to me.
