Was considering a new Heritage bass, but...

I got sticker shocked when I received a price quote back from a certain well known Heritage dealer! I guess I was thinking that not as much labor went into a solid body bolt-on-neck bass as say, a 150 or 535 and my expectation was, well, lower, waaayyyy lower. Oh well, it is what it is and I can just dream!

Can you give a ball park figure of where they are?

Under $100,000!

Whew! That's a relief.

Amen!

Jim told me the MSRP was $2600. And with a smile he added, "The rest is up to you and the dealer"

Was this in the ballpark Will?

Dealer price was 75% of that. I don't see where there would be much variation. I was hoping it would have been more in the $1500 range, but I had no clue when I called and spoke to Jim. He said he had one ready to be finished so I called Wolfe and got the price. I wish it was in my budget.

It's called the art of negotiations or haggling. Wolfe is always the most expensive, but they have always come down from their initial price for me.

I don't know enough about bass guitars to determine the value of, or the significant differences between a Kalamazoo/Heritage made bolt on neck bass versus a California/Fender made bolt on neck bass (each with an Alder body and Maple neck). Heritage doesn't publish any specs either so I don't know why they are priced the way they are either. I can only speculate that they got out of the bass business because they couldn't compete on price due to their cost of manufacturing.

I imagine that you now wish you wouldn't have sold the used Heritage bass you had for a little while.

My understanding is the new ones are swamp ash body. And yes, I kinda wish I had not sold the 1986 but finances dictated otherwise, so its water over the dam.

I guess I haven't bought recently as Wolfe used to always be the least expensive. Of course, this was back before he had a brick and mortar store and was internet/guitar shows only. Or maybe he just gives me good deals. I first became aquatinted with Jay in the late '90s after a deal with Ed Roman went south. He scored me a few Heritage NAMM passes back in the late 90s and/or early 2000s.

Jay told me previously that HOC members get discounts.

Then you think he would have told me that- or asked if I was an HOC member.

I called Jay after you and I talk on the phone. I told him you are a HOC member and a friend of mine. He told me he would give you his best price.

I have no idea what his cost is or his markup.

I wish they would reconsider the price, $2000 and under puts it in Rickenbacker territory, $2000 and up is used Alembic, high dollar Fender, Musicman etc.

I don't want a Heritage that looks like a Fender. I can get that Grabber for under a grand.... just sayin.

I paid 1500 for a minty used Suhr J , that goes for almost 3k new , just last week purchased a new MM Sterling that is breathtaking and that was 1800 , paid 2100 for a Ric 4004cii so that bass falls right into that bad ass basses to own with price tag to match club . Now Custom stuff like Roscoe and Custom Shop Fender can soar over that as well as many a Boutique bass , so that is kinda the entry level of real quality / price range for a bass these days . There are crazy deals to be had used but the Heritage bass is rare as hens teeth .

I love this Sterling , you know how new guitar days are right .

Thank you H ! I just couldn't say no , that neck , it has a one piece Ash body , just over 8 lbs and sounds ballsy and aggressive yet the classic 2 band can coax lots of good useable tones and the mutes are super cool . Oldshool funk & R&B at your finger tips . Funny thing is I've had Rays before and never bonded with them but man and I in love with this Sterling .

$2000 is WELL into EBMM territory. That's PDN, SLO, Classic range right there. You can get new Stingray 4H's for $1300-1400 in "normal" colors, and Sterling 4H's for maybe $50-100 more. The classic sterlings and those with multiple pickups and fancy paint are more, but still are mostly under $2000.

I don't mean to be harsh, but that price is not in line with what you receive with Heritage. I'd much rather have a MusicMan bass, as they are among the most well-regarded company out there, and their customer service is SECOND TO NONE. I had a problem with the neck angle of my SR5 I got a year ago being a bit to low, so they sent me out one of the official color coded MM shim sets. My bass came with the brown shim installed, but now It's got a pink one, and plays perfectly. It also cost me $1400 SHIPPED. new.

That, and I also have a Carvin P-bass coming in, with active electronics, P & J pickups, active electronics, for just above $1000.

Perhaps after they don't sell very many at that price they may reconsider. On the other hand, they may not care. Heritage does things their own way which makes the company unique. I have no criticism of that-just because I cannot afford one does not mean they won't sell.

Just something to think about,, Sweetwater has a bunch Of American Standard P-Basses with CS pickups.. $1299 with a hard shell case.. That's probably what I'm gonna get.. If I hear back from Tim, and they ask me to be their bass player.. My 2 cents... :)

For around $800 you can get a used G&L USA made bass guitar. Check out the L-2000, its a sweet bass, and IMO, better than the Fender American Standard.
