kidsmoke Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Ok, for today's installment of "ridiculously subjective question to ask someone's opinion of".....on the slim chance that someone here actually has "first ear" experience with this choice...which would you pick? Guitar: 9.4# 150CM with chunky neck all appointments standard (tonepros/nashville/grovers) Fralin PAF (7.5/8.0) or Seth Lovers? Do not answer "Throbaks" "Bareknuckles" or "Lollar!" Fralin or Seth...and why. Thanks for your consideration. =]
PunkKitty Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 FWIW, KS is planning to buy my 150. BG Lizards are another option. These are pickups that I have and that I'm willing to install for him.
Billgelder Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Throb.......................................... oh ever-mind. Fralin Pure PAF
GuitArtMan Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 I'd probably go with the Fralins as well. I absolutely love Seth's in a semi-hollow body, but find them a tad nasally in solid bodies whereas I've got some killer sounds from Fralins in a solid body. That's just my experience
koula901 Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 I can't say that I have an educated guess, but I voted Fralins just because I have experience with 3 sets of his pickups and they've all sounded amazing. I had Seth Lovers in my 150 and didn't care for them, but then, I don't care for dark sounding pickups.
MartyGrass Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Toss up. I've got both- several sets each. They sound pretty similar. I'd worry about something consequential, like strings!
Genericmusic Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 I thin it all boils down to personal preference. I happen to like Seymour Duncan's gear.
Gitfiddler Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Having heard both brands at low volumes and overdriven high volume, I recommend the Seths for low volume, clean playing...and Fralings for the loud, overdriven stuff. Seth in the neck and Fralin in the bridge.
slider313 Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Fralin Pure PAF's. I've had both and the Fralin's have those overtones that the Seth's just don't have. The Seth's can sound rather "dry" in comparison.
Cajun Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Fralins - but I prefer the Unbuckers over the pure PAFs. I have never been disappointed with Fralins - they sound wonderful.
tbonesullivan Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 I love the seth lovers in my H158. Just magical tone. They aren't high gain but they hit the amps just right so that even with low output they make it scream. Of course you could also look at the Dimarzio 36th anniversary PAFs. Everyone seems to be down a lot on the "big makers" but they got big for a reason.
big bob Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 That's a great dilemma to have, congratulations!
kidsmoke Posted November 12, 2013 Author Posted November 12, 2013 Thanks for the feedback, lads. I told kitty I was leaning Fralin and she suggested I throw it out to the masses and see what ya'll were thinking. I'll let you know when she's in her new home. Long time coming on this one.
schundog Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Congratulations on the new axe, Kip! I don't think there is a wrong answer here, but I have Fralins in my 150 that sound GREAT! That said, Seth Lovers in my Millenium H-155 also sound great. Keep us posted, man.
kidsmoke Posted November 12, 2013 Author Posted November 12, 2013 Congratulations on the new axe, Kip! Well she's not mine just yet. PK graciously granted me dibs on this some time back, and has been very patient as some other projects have taken precedence. Word is my Round Tuit arrives in a week or two, so it's game on.
kidsmoke Posted November 13, 2013 Author Posted November 13, 2013 Yes, and now I'm in Indianapolis. Next week, Detroit.
rockabilly69 Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Ridiculous question, so my equally ridiculous answer, the one that sounds the best in that guitar!
Blunote Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 Yes, and now I'm in Indianapolis. Next week, Detroit. And what brings you to Detroit?
kidsmoke Posted November 13, 2013 Author Posted November 13, 2013 And what brings you to Detroit? New Gig. it's part of my territory, as is the rest of the state
