MartyGrass Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 This is a 2010 SKB. There are a couple of special aspects. First, this is the only Heritage that Tom Van Hoose bought for his personal use. For those who don't know Tom, he's an archtop player and historian. Here are his book and his website. Needless to say he's very discriminating yet has the largest archtop collection I know of. He is starting to liquidate some of that collection as he gets up in years. http://www.vanhoosevintage.com/ The second unusual feature of the guitar is the finish. It's an almond sunburst that has some red added. The recently passed Floyd did very few of these finishes because of the difficulty of getting them right. As I understand it, Marv can also do them now. The label simply says "custom finish". The coloring is what really drew me to this guitar. It has HRWs but doesn't have the dotted toggle switch cap. That's about it. This one doesn't have a SKB number on it, just the usual serial number. So I don't know which SKB this is. I've had two other SKBs that clearly showed how many previous SKBs were built prior. I guess they don't do that anymore. I wonder how many more SKBs Heritage will make. Their overall production is way down now, even for Heritage, probably due to the sucky economy. Anyway I figure this is my last shot at getting a real classic. These pix are daylight lit to show the true colors.
Guest HRB853370 Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Very nice. Is that a blemish on the upper bout? And....last incoming...ever?
MartyGrass Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 The seller is really thorough, and that's his lunch. I asked him about the shading of the finish. He responded with these and more pix. Here's my favorite. He also sent me a video!
MartyGrass Posted November 14, 2013 Author Posted November 14, 2013 Very nice. Is that a blemish on the upper bout? And....last incoming...ever? There are no flaws. That's dust. The video shows all the tedious details. This was in Van Hoose's collection until recently. The current seller bought it and now needs the dough. It has nitro swirls but no dings, cracks, yada yada. I'll get an appropriate toggle switch cap for the HRWs to be historically correct.
Gitfiddler Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Amazing! Congratulations on acquiring yet another piece of Heritage history.
JackBaruth Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 I bought Mr. Van Hoose's book and he was kind enough to sign it for me. Let me get in line on this!
Steiner Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 I think the subliminal message here is that comparing that guitar to others is apple to oranges and the idea is a lemon. Nice Snatch!
Vanschoyck Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Oh my, that's the kind of guitar that makes me a little crazy.
FredZepp Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 That one looks great from every angle. Love that finish and the flamed maple back .
Keith7940236 Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Very nice guitar Mark, I'd love to hear that one!
hinesarchtop Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 What a stunner. Some of the best flame I've seem on a Heritage. That color has been described as dark almond by Haar guitars. It is a bit tricky to pull off. You have to tone the reds down with some brown and make light passes until the shading is right while keeping it translucent. The guitar in the pic is one I made for a friend. It has a similar wide, wavy flame. The shading was really close to yours then he asked for a little stronger red. I talk to Vanhoose about this instrument and waited a day too long vacillating and missed out. Please give a tone report or clips. Whats the neck like. congrats Marc.
Guitarbean Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 Oh my, that's the kind of guitar that makes me a little crazy. just a little? That thing is SICK! I haven't had a NGD in a while...that's a good thing...that's a good thing....that's a good thing...that's a good thing (drenched in a cold sweat)
MartyGrass Posted November 15, 2013 Author Posted November 15, 2013 Was this the one on Ebay from Canada? Yes. The seller is actually from Michigan not far from me.
Ned Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Super fine. Congratulations. Please feature her here often.
heritagefan7 Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 I already thought you had the greatest collection of Heritage guitars possible...now, I stand corrected. That is beautiful. Congrats.
bolero Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Astounding!!! I'm running out of superlatives to describe your guitars, Martygrass!!
58super Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Beautiful guitar. The finish and the wood are amazing.
buckwheat Posted November 21, 2013 Posted November 21, 2013 Beautiful. I just picked up a Golden Eagle on eBay and it's a killer guitar.
haza5150 Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Hi Marty and happy new year to you and the rest of the members. Your SKB is the same guitar I was negotiating to buy from Tom Van Hoose last year, but then had a change of mind because I wanted to get a translucent blue SKB instead, which you'll remember I wrote to you about. In the end I never did find a translucent blue SKB but did find a mint sunburst Guild Benedetto Johnny Smith Award to add to my blonde one. They are two of the 18 signed by Johnny Smith, and are additionally signed by Robert Benedetto on the back of the headstock. Bob has confirmed that he did sign both of them. Both guitars are incredible masterpieces and I am very lucky to own them. I'll upload some pictures plus some of the Heritage johnny Smith I got from you. You'll remember that I was unhappy with the black hardware, which I have been changing to gold. To my eyes it looks fantastic now, but I have some more changes in mind. Best regards for now. Hassan
