MartyGrass Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 This is a 2010 Super Kenny Burrell with HRWs and the 4 point mount system patented by Heritage's Ren Wall. The neck feels medium D to me and the nut is bone. The guitar does look better in person. The label is signed by Kenny Burrell and also says "custom finish" and premium wood package. The custom finish looks like almond sunburst with a touch more red in it. The woods are definitely not just "ultra", which Heritage uses to designate the prettiest in inventory at the moment of assembly. The top is Adirondack spruce with tight grain and some bear claw. Those indicate slow tree growth.
MartyGrass Posted November 22, 2013 Author Posted November 22, 2013 More to come when I get a better Internet signal.
MartyGrass Posted November 22, 2013 Author Posted November 22, 2013 It weighs 7 lbs. even, so it is light.
H Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Beautiful! Where do you track all of these amazing guitars down?
Gitfiddler Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 OK, MG~ Now you've scored my Holy Grail of Heritage archtops! Nicely done...once again.
yoslate Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Mark...I don't know that it gets any better than that! Congratulations; it's a lovely archtop...just beautiful!
Yooper Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Oh, yes! A remarkable specimen indeed. So good to see not ALL the new guitars around here are G brand this week.
tonedeaf Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Wow! Do you think you could accidentally send me this guitar instead of the amp/cab?
RhoadsScholar Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 Wow, better than expected. What a nice, premium archtop...... love the color/shading/flame in that one.
2bornot2bop Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Congrats Mark. That SKB was on gbase forever before it went to Canada. A Doctor/collector previously owned it. I came close to buying it on gbase. She's a beauty. How's she acoustically?
MartyGrass Posted November 25, 2013 Author Posted November 25, 2013 Van Hoose owned it personally for a few years then put it GBase. I took the guitar to Pete Moreno to set up and am waiting.
2bornot2bop Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Van Hoose owned it personally for a few years then put it GBase. I took the guitar to Pete Moreno to set up and am waiting. Yes, that was his name. I called the number on the gbase ad and his staff answered. Not knowing his history I thought this is a guy you'd want to buy an archtop from. I'm happy you ended up with the guitar. What's up with the seller? He barely owned it a year!
MartyGrass Posted November 25, 2013 Author Posted November 25, 2013 Dr. Van Hoose is Mr. Snootypants when it comes to archtops. (Pardon my French.) He's the king of corksniffers. Here's his authoritative text on the forerunner of the Super Eagle and the Super Kenny Burrell. http://www.amazon.com/The-Gibson-Super-400-Guitar/dp/0879303441/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385409495&sr=8-1&keywords=van+hoose+guitar I have no idea how many of these large archtops he owns, but there is always a turnover. Here's his website. http://www.vanhoosevintage.com/default.aspx Here's some more on Van Hoose's influence. http://www.themomi.org/museum/Chinery/article/6.html
FredZepp Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Of course, that Kenny Burrell is a stunner. Great finish and woods on that , classic look. (On the Van Hoose website .. that Kalamazoo Award looks sweet . )
