Autographing a Heritage question

I am attending a show Sunday and meeting the band afterwards. I thought about this for awhile and decided to get the autographs on my player guitar (she ain't pretty but sounds great) over one I don't use. My player is a black 140-P from the early 90s. I assumed I could just use a silver Sharpie for this but after researching, I found all sorts of variables as to what would last, how to preserve it and even what to use based on the pain used for the guitar. So with that said, has anyone some suggestions about how to go about this starting with what paint was used in that era? I don't want to necessarily learn by trial and error although I can if I must.

Thanks!

Don't do it!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't care if she's a player or a minty closet queen, the only person who should be making marks on that guitar is you (the owner) end of story. Don't get me wrong, I can and do appreciate the value of particular autograph(s), I just think in this case as the guitar acting as a quasi-extension of ones creativity, therefore, the thought of another musician in a way "staking their claim" on such an important part of your creative process is just plain wrong......I feel the same way about "pre-reliced" guitars.

Have a great weekend!

The finish on your guitar is nitrocellulose lacquer

I hadn't planned on a philosophical response like yours Matt, but point well taken. The sigs wouldn't be of any monetary value, just personal. There are lots of folks in the band.. upwards of 20 people I think, so the guitar would be riddled with autographs. I guess my connection is this particular band introduced me to Heritage Guitars via Alex Skolnick (It's Trans-siberian Orchestra), even though he has since left them. But, I am now rethinking this to only have the actual players sign. Maybe I can buy a pick guard? If so, would a standard Les Paul guard fit an H-140? The one that is on there is wood grained... very odd with a black guitar.

I am an autograph junkie when it comes to guitar players. Every so often, when i am in guitar center or some of the other music shops, they usually have clearance pickguards from Gibson, fender, etc. . I buy em, tuck em away, then bring them to shows for autographs.

One of my prized possessions is I got 'Les Paul' to autograph a Stratocaster pickguard (don't see too many of those). After you get the autograph, just shoot some high quality clear laquer right over the top. I always get the metallic gold or silver sharpies. you can always get on the bands good side by just giving them the sharpies (you would be suprised as to how many times there are no sharpies around when it comes to autograph time)

You can always sort out later if you want to put that pickguard on a guitar. Anyway , that is how I cured my desider to get guitars signed.
